1.11-14 Outline
Exegetical idea: Our predetermined inheritance is guaranteed by the seal of the Spirit Subject: Why should God be blessed/praised (3, 11-14)? Complement: God is to be praised/blessed because he has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in Christ and through Christ (3): Specifically these blessings are the seal of the Spirit: In Christ, the Jews inheritance is part of God's eternal plan (11-12) In Christ, Gentiles are included in this inheritance (13-14). Inheritance is given when we believe When believe, we are sealed by Spirit, who guarantees our inheritance until our future redemption Homiletical Idea: Our inheritance is guaranteed by the Spirit Subject: Why should God be blessed/praised (3, 11-14)? Complement: God is to be praised because he has blessed us in Christ (3): Specifically, blessings are the seal of the Spirit: In Christ, the Jews inheritance is part of God's eternal plan (11-12) In Christ, Gentiles are included in this inheritance (13-14). Inheritance is ours when we believe The seal/Spirit guarantees our inheritance The ptc phrase can be either means or ground. Predestined, all things, God's will alludes to what he has already said about election/adoption, God's eternal plan to unite all things under his rule. The sealing represents the reception of the Spirit in salvation and so though a distinct act, is all inclusive of the Spirit in the life of the believer. Both language of sealing and guarantee point to the security of the believer in God.
