So the captain came and said to him,
מַה־ לְּךָ֣ נִרְדָּ֑ם
“What do you mean, you sleeper?
ק֚וּם קְרָ֣א אֶל־ אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ
Arise, call out to your god!
אוּלַ֞י יִתְעַשֵּׁ֧ת הָאֱלֹהִ֛ים לָ֖נוּ
Perhaps the god will give a thought to us,
וְלֹ֥א נֹאבֵֽד׃
that we may not perish.”

הַגִּידָה־ נָּ֣א לָ֔נוּ בַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר לְמִי־ הָרָעָ֥ה הַזֹּ֖את לָ֑נוּ
“Tell us on whose account this evil has come upon us.
מַה־ מְּלַאכְתְּךָ֙
What is your occupation?
וּמֵאַ֣יִן תָּב֔וֹא
And where do you come from?
מָ֣ה אַרְצֶ֔ךָ
What is your country?
וְאֵֽי־ מִזֶּ֥ה עַ֖ם אָֽתָּה׃
And of what people are you?”
וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אֲלֵיהֶ֖ם
And he said to them,
עִבְרִ֣י אָנֹ֑כִי
“I am a Hebrew,
וְאֶת־ יְהוָ֞ה אֱלֹהֵ֤י הַשָּׁמַ֙יִם֙ אֲנִ֣י יָרֵ֔א
and I fear the Lord, the God of heaven,
אֲשֶׁר־ עָשָׂ֥ה אֶת־ הַיָּ֖ם וְאֶת־ הַיַּבָּשָֽׁה׃
who made the sea and the dry land.”

מַה־ נַּ֣עֲשֶׂה לָּ֔ךְ
“What shall we do to you,
וְיִשְׁתֹּ֥ק הַיָּ֖ם מֵֽעָלֵ֑ינוּ
that the sea may quiet down for us?”
כִּ֥י הַיָּ֖ם הוֹלֵ֥ךְ וְסֹעֵֽר׃
For the sea grew more and more tempestuous.
וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֲלֵיהֶ֗ם
He said to them,
שָׂא֙וּנִי֙
“Pick me up
וַהֲטִילֻ֣נִי אֶל־ הַיָּ֔ם
and hurl me into the sea;
וְיִשְׁתֹּ֥ק הַיָּ֖ם מֵֽעֲלֵיכֶ֑ם
then the sea will quiet down for you,

Nevertheless, the men rowed hard

וְלֹ֣א יָכֹ֑לוּ
but they could not,
כִּ֣י הַיָּ֔ם הוֹלֵ֥ךְ וְסֹעֵ֖ר עֲלֵיהֶֽם׃
for the sea grew more and more tempestuous against them.

Therefore they called out to the Lord,

“O Lord, let us not perish for this man’s life,

and lay not on us innocent blood,
כִּֽי־ אַתָּ֣ה יְהוָ֔ה כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר חָפַ֖צְתָּ עָשִֽׂיתָ׃

וַיִּשְׂאוּ֙ אֶת־ יוֹנָ֔ה
So they picked up Jonah
וַיְטִלֻ֖הוּ אֶל־ הַיָּ֑ם
and hurled him into the sea,
וַיַּעֲמֹ֥ד הַיָּ֖ם מִזַּעְפּֽוֹ׃
and the sea ceased from its raging.
וַיִּֽירְא֧וּ הָאֲנָשִׁ֛ים יִרְאָ֥ה גְדוֹלָ֖ה אֶת־ יְהוָ֑ה
Then the men feared the Lord exceedingly,
וַיִּֽזְבְּחוּ־ זֶ֙בַח֙ לַֽיהוָ֔ה
and they offered a sacrifice to the Lord
וַֽיִּדְּר֖וּ נְדָרִֽים׃
and made vows.
וַיְמַ֤ן יְהוָה֙ דָּ֣ג גָּד֔וֹל
And the Lord appointed a great fish
לִבְלֹ֖עַ אֶת־ יוֹנָ֑ה
to swallow up Jonah.
וַיְהִ֤י יוֹנָה֙ בִּמְעֵ֣י הַדָּ֔ג שְׁלֹשָׁ֥ה יָמִ֖ים וּשְׁלֹשָׁ֥ה לֵילֽוֹת׃
And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
וַיִּתְפַּלֵּ֣ל יוֹנָ֔ה אֶל־ יְהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהָ֑יו מִמְּעֵ֖י הַדָּגָֽה׃ וַיֹּ֗אמֶר
Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the belly of the fish, saying,
קָ֠רָאתִי מִצָּ֥רָה לִ֛י אֶל־ יְהוָ֖ה
“I called out to the Lord, out of my distress,
וַֽיַּעֲנֵ֑נִי
and he answered me;
מִבֶּ֧טֶן שְׁא֛וֹל שִׁוַּ֖עְתִּי
out of the belly of Sheol I cried,
שָׁמַ֥עְתָּ קוֹלִֽי׃
and you heard my voice.
וַתַּשְׁלִיכֵ֤נִי מְצוּלָה֙ בִּלְבַ֣ב יַמִּ֔ים
For you cast me into the deep, into the heart of the seas,
וְנָהָ֖ר יְסֹבְבֵ֑נִי
and the flood surrounded me;
כָּל־ מִשְׁבָּרֶ֥יךָ וְגַלֶּ֖יךָ עָלַ֥י עָבָֽרוּ׃
all your waves and your billows passed over me.
וַאֲנִ֣י אָמַ֔רְתִּי נִגְרַ֖שְׁתִּי מִנֶּ֣גֶד עֵינֶ֑יךָ
Then I said, ‘I am driven away from your sight;
אַ֚ךְ אוֹסִ֣יף לְהַבִּ֔יט אֶל־ הֵיכַ֖ל קָדְשֶֽׁךָ׃
yet I shall again look upon your holy temple.’
אֲפָפ֤וּנִי מַ֙יִם֙ עַד־ נֶ֔פֶשׁ
The waters closed in over me to take my life;
תְּה֖וֹם יְסֹבְבֵ֑נִי
the deep surrounded me;
ס֖וּף חָב֥וּשׁ לְרֹאשִֽׁי׃
weeds were wrapped about my head
לְקִצְבֵ֤י הָרִים֙ יָרַ֔דְתִּי
at the roots of the mountains. I went down
הָאָ֛רֶץ בְּרִחֶ֥יהָ בַעֲדִ֖י לְעוֹלָ֑ם
to the land whose bars closed upon me forever;
וַתַּ֧עַל מִשַּׁ֛חַת חַיַּ֖י יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהָֽי׃
yet you brought up my life from the pit, O Lord my God.
בְּהִתְעַטֵּ֤ף עָלַי֙ נַפְשִׁ֔י
When my life was fainting away,
אֶת־ יְהוָ֖ה זָכָ֑רְתִּי
I remembered the Lord,

וַתָּב֤וֹא אֵלֶ֙יךָ֙ תְּפִלָּתִ֔י אֶל־ הֵיכַ֖ל קָדְשֶֽׁךָ׃
and my prayer came to you, into your holy temple.
מְשַׁמְּרִ֖ים הַבְלֵי־ שָׁ֑וְא חַסְדָּ֖ם יַעֲזֹֽבוּ׃
Those who pay regard to vain idols forsake their hope of steadfast love.
וַאֲנִ֗י בְּק֤וֹל תּוֹדָה֙ אֶזְבְּחָה־ לָּ֔ךְ
But I with the voice of thanksgiving will sacrifice to you;
אֲשֶׁ֥ר נָדַ֖רְתִּי אֲשַׁלֵּ֑מָה
what I have vowed I will pay.

and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord.
וְנִֽינְוֵ֗ה הָיְתָ֤ה עִיר־ גְּדוֹלָה֙ לֵֽאלֹהִ֔ים מַהֲלַ֖ךְ שְׁלֹ֥שֶׁת יָמִֽים׃
Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, three days’ journey in breadth.
וַיָּ֤חֶל יוֹנָה֙ לָב֣וֹא בָעִ֔יר מַהֲלַ֖ךְ י֣וֹם אֶחָ֑ד
Jonah began to go into the city, going a day’s journey.
וַיִּקְרָא֙ וַיֹּאמַ֔ר
And he called out,
ע֚וֹד אַרְבָּעִ֣ים י֔וֹם
“Yet forty days,
וְנִֽינְוֵ֖ה נֶהְפָּֽכֶת׃
and Nineveh shall be overthrown!”
וַֽיַּאֲמִ֛ינוּ אַנְשֵׁ֥י נִֽינְוֵ֖ה בֵּֽאלֹהִ֑ים
And the people of Nineveh believed God.
וַיִּקְרְאוּ ־ צוֹם֙
They called for a fast
וַיִּלְבְּשׁ֣וּ שַׂקִּ֔ים מִגְּדוֹלָ֖ם וְעַד־ קְטַנָּֽם׃
and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them to the least of them.

and he arose from his throne,

“O Lord, is not this what I said
עַד־ הֱיוֹתִי֙ עַל־ אַדְמָתִ֔י
when I was yet in my country?
עַל־ כֵּ֥ן קִדַּ֖מְתִּי לִבְרֹ֣חַ תַּרְשִׁ֑ישָׁה
That is why I made haste to flee to Tarshish;
כִּ֣י יָדַ֗עְתִּי כִּ֤י אַתָּה֙ אֵֽל־ חַנּ֣וּן וְרַח֔וּם אֶ֤רֶךְ אַפַּ֙יִם֙ וְרַב־ חֶ֔סֶד וְנִחָ֖ם עַל־ הָרָעָֽה׃
for I knew that you are a gracious God and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, and relenting from disaster.
וְעַתָּ֣ה יְהוָ֔ה קַח־ נָ֥א אֶת־ נַפְשִׁ֖י מִמֶּ֑נִּי
Therefore now, O Lord, please take my life from me,
כִּ֛י ט֥וֹב מוֹתִ֖י מֵחַיָּֽי׃ ס
for it is better for me to die than to live.”
וַיֹּ֣אמֶר יְהוָ֔ה הַהֵיטֵ֖ב חָ֥רָה לָֽךְ׃
And the Lord said, “Do you do well to be angry?”
וַיֵּצֵ֤א יוֹנָה֙ מִן־ הָעִ֔יר
Jonah went out of the city
וַיֵּ֖שֶׁב מִקֶּ֣דֶם לָעִ֑יר
and sat to the east of the city
וַיַּעַשׂ֩ ל֨וֹ שָׁ֜ם סֻכָּ֗ה
and made a booth for himself there.
וַיֵּ֤שֶׁב תַּחְתֶּ֙יהָ֙ בַּצֵּ֔ל
He sat under it in the shade,
עַ֚ד אֲשֶׁ֣ר יִרְאֶ֔ה מַה־ יִּהְיֶ֖ה בָּעִֽיר׃
till he should see what would become of the city.
וַיְמַ֣ן יְהוָֽה־ אֱ֠לֹהִים קִיקָי֞וֹן
Now the Lord God appointed a plant
וַיַּ֣עַל ׀ מֵעַ֣ל לְיוֹנָ֗ה
and made it come up over Jonah,
לִֽהְי֥וֹת צֵל֙ עַל־ רֹאשׁ֔וֹ
that it might be a shade over his head,
לְהַצִּ֥יל ל֖וֹ מֵרָֽעָת֑וֹ
to save him from his discomfort.
וַיִּשְׂמַ֥ח יוֹנָ֛ה עַל־ הַקִּֽיקָי֖וֹן שִׂמְחָ֥ה גְדוֹלָֽה׃
So Jonah was exceedingly glad because of the plant.
וַיְמַ֤ן הָֽאֱלֹהִים֙ תּוֹלַ֔עַת בַּעֲל֥וֹת הַשַּׁ֖חַר לַֽמָּחֳרָ֑ת
But when dawn came up the next day, God appointed a worm
וַתַּ֥ךְ אֶת־ הַקִּֽיקָי֖וֹן
that attacked the plant,
וַיִּיבָֽשׁ׃
so that it withered.
וַיְהִ֣י ׀ כִּזְרֹ֣חַ הַשֶּׁ֗מֶשׁ
When the sun rose,
וַיְמַ֨ן אֱלֹהִ֜ים ר֤וּחַ קָדִים֙ חֲרִישִׁ֔ית
God appointed a scorching east wind,
וַתַּ֥ךְ הַשֶּׁ֛מֶשׁ עַל־ רֹ֥אשׁ יוֹנָ֖ה
and the sun beat down on the head of Jonah
וַיִּתְעַלָּ֑ף
so that he was faint.
וַיִּשְׁאַ֤ל אֶת־ נַפְשׁוֹ֙ לָמ֔וּת
And he asked that he might die
וַיֹּ֕אמֶר ט֥וֹב מוֹתִ֖י מֵחַיָּֽי׃
and said, “It is better for me to die than to live.”
וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֱלֹהִים֙ אֶל־ יוֹנָ֔ה הַהֵיטֵ֥ב חָרָֽה־ לְךָ֖ עַל־ הַקִּֽיקָי֑וֹן
But God said to Jonah, “Do you do well to be angry for the plant?”
וַיֹּ֕אמֶר הֵיטֵ֥ב חָֽרָה־ לִ֖י עַד־ מָֽוֶת׃
And he said, “Yes, I do well to be angry, angry enough to die.”
וַיֹּ֣אמֶר יְהוָ֔ה אַתָּ֥ה חַ֙סְתָּ֙ עַל־ הַקִּ֣יקָי֔וֹן
And the Lord said, “You pity the plant, for
אֲשֶׁ֛ר לֹא־ עָמַ֥לְתָּ בּ֖וֹ
