Main point summary
Religion that pleases God is not pompous and careless but focused on mercy towards others and holiness towards God
If anyone thinks himself to be religious,
If a man thinks he is pious and pleasing to God
and yet does not 1 a bridle his tongue
But instead he has not tamed his tongue
but deceives his own heart,
And is therefore deluded about his piety
this man’s religion is worthless.
Then his religion is of no value before God
Pure and undefiled religion a in the sight of our God and Father is this:
Instead , religion that pleases God
to b visit c orphans and widows in their distress,
Is to care for the needy and defenseless
and to keep oneself unstained 1 by d the world.
And to keep oneself pure and undefiled by the world
God is so kind, loving, and pure that he is pleased by us being conformed to this same disposition. Our tongues and the carelessness with which we speak reveals ourconcern (or lack thereof) for others.
