Therefore, this righteousness is a response to saving grace. Block sees this righteousness as an aproval before God for Israel's response to his act of grace. He states "In his mercy Yahweh has rescured Israel from Egpt and revealed to his people the appropriate response to grace that they might fear and obey him. If they do they will not only live and prosper, but they will also hear his approval, 'well done, good and faithful servant [vassal] . . . . Enter into the joy of your master [suzerian]" (Pg 238). There doesn't seem to be any significance in the change of words. Moses probabaly interchanges the word as he does in other places in Deuteronomy. How can it be that the sons of Israel have been truly freed if they are still expected to live in obedience to Yahweh? Shouldn't freedom mean do what you want? It worth noting that they are called to obey Yahweh for their good. Yahweh in giving his commandments to Israel is seeking their good. The only good and true freedom then that Israel can enjoy is to obey Yahweh. Freedom from the slavery in Egypt does not mean a freedom to do what they want but what Yahweh, Israel's Savior commands for their good. In a sense, Israel has simply changed slaves masters. Their slave master in Egypt did not seek their good in the things he asked them to do, but their new Slave Master, Yahweh seeks their good in his commandments to them. McConville says "The order in Yahweh's world, as opposed to the fixed political-religious order of Egypt, represented by teh rigid control of Pharaoh and the principle of maat , was one in which people were exhorted to righteousness in freedom--the reverse of all Pharaoh-like regimes" (Pg 146). Paul uses the same category to describe the life of believers in Jesus who are part of the New and Final Exodus. He says, we were slaves to sin (Rom 6:20) but Christ rescued us from this slavery (Col 1:13) and now we are slaves to righteousness (Rom 6:19).
