Main Idea: Based on Yahweh's covenant with his people, they owe complete alligiance to him in all things: Yahweh's word must be central to them, they must fear Yahweh and teach his word and works to their children, and separate themselves from all other nations. Exegetical Idea: A Call to obey Yahweh based on the covenant he made with his people (5:1–6:3) Hear the command of Yahweh and learn them to obey them (5:1) Because of the covenant Yahweh made with you (5:2–31) Yahweh spoke face to face with you (5:2–5) He demanded full alligiance from you (5:6–11) He called you to keep the sabbath (5:12–15) He called you to honor your parents (5:16) He called you to communial faithfulness (5:17–22) Israel out of fear asked for a mediator (5:23–27) Yahweh gave the commandments (5:28–31) Hear, learn and obey Yahweh for your good (5:32–6:3) A call to whole hearted love for Yahweh now and in the future (6:4–7:1-15) Only Yahweh Israel's God is God (6:4) So you must love him with their whole beings (6:5) So Yahweh's words must be central in your lives (6:6–9) So fear him when he brings you into the the Land (6:10–19). So declare His works and commands to your son (6:20–25). So you shall destroy the nations because you are a chosen people (7:1-15) Questions: How does Yahweh's bringing of Israel to the Promised Land relate to Israel's resposiblility of entering that same Land? When Moses says, "When Yahweh your God brings you into the land that you are entering to take possession of it" he probably want to emphasize the fact that Israel's entrance into the land is an act of God. Israel will not enter if Yahweh will not bring them in. Yahweh's bringing of Israel into the land and Israel's entrance is possibly a cause and effect relationship. Yahweh's bringing the cause and it is effected in that Israel enters. Is it right for a perfectly holy God to command the destruction of seemingly innocent nations? The command to destroy all the nations before Israel is a fulfillment of Genesis 15:16 since Israel is Abraham's offspring. In Genesis 15:16 God says to Abraham, "They shall come back here in teh fourth generation, for hte iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete." In Genesis 15 God makes a covenant with Abraham and promises him that his offspring shall be innumerous (Gen 15:5) and assures him that his offspring shall dwell in a strange land and be "afflicated for four hundred years" (Gen 15:13). But Yahweh will bring them out and bring them into the promised land and they will destroy the Amorites as an act of God's jugdment on them because of their sins (Gen 15:14-15). So the command to destroy the nations is an act of jugdment for their sins and therefore right. God is holy and will not let any sin go unpunished for that will mean that he has compromised the essence of his being. How can Israel be called "a people holy to Yahweh" when they disobey so regularly? How are they holy and which kind of holiness is it? It is most likely that the holiness here is not holiness in the sense of personal practical obedience, rather it refers to the separatedness of Israel as a nation. Israel is holy in that she is set apart for Yahweh. Yahweh has chosen her and set her apart.
