In opening paragraph ( 5:1-5 ) we have the three tests surface again, with the words "believe" and "faith," and "love," and [obey] "his commands." (2-3 ) If we truly love God we find ourselves not only loving his children, but also obeying his commands. And this is not difficult for us (obedience; difficult for our children? Not difficult? What is difficult about it?) because his commands are not burdensome... Matthew 23:4 - They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to move them with their finger. Matthew 11:30 - For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." Romans 12:2 - 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. ( 4 ) Our new birth enables us to [conquer] keep his commands which also makes them less burdensome. Jesus came by the WATER and the BLOOD 1. Sacraments? Baptism and Communion? But this refers not to some present activity, but to his past historical coming. 2. The spear and the water and blood that flowed? 3. ('water' and 'blood' must be historical experiences through which he witnesses to himself, the person Jesus) WATER = Baptism of Jesus (beginning of is ministry). BLOOD = Cross of Jesus (completion of his ministry). And so John asserts that Jesus (THE CHRIST) came through this baptism and cross. Common heresy remember taught that Christ came upon Jesus at baptism and left him before the suffering of the cross. Possible secondary allusion is that the blood symbolized 'the precious blood that atoned for our guilt of sin' (justification) and the water symbolized "the pure water to cleanse us from all polution of sin' (sanctification). Holy Spirit testifies to us, from within 1 Corinthians 12:3 - 3 Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says "Jesus is accursed!" and no one can say "Jesus is Lord" except in the Holy Spirit. (10-12) Eternal life is not a prize we can or do earn - it is an undeserved gift. Eternal life is found in Christ alone, which is why God gave and gives his Son. Eternal life, which is a gift, is a present possession for the believer.

esv
Everyone who believes [ present, continuing activity ] that Jesus is the Christ
has been born [ past experience ] of God,
and everyone who loves the Father loves whoever has been born of him.
By this we know that we love the children of God, [ or, "how do we know that we love the children of God?" ]
when we love God and obey his commandments.
For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments.
ground
questionanswer
And his commandments are not burdensome.
For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world.
And this is the victory that has overcome the world-- our faith .
Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?
bilateral
This is he who came by water and blood-- Jesus Christ;
not by the water only but by the water and the blood.
ideaexplanation
And the Spirit is the one who testifies,
because the Spirit is the truth.
For there are three that testify:
the Spirit and the water and the blood ; and these three agree.
inference
If we receive the testimony of men, the testimony of God is greater,
for this is the testimony of God that he has borne concerning his Son.
actionmanner
Whoever believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself.
Whoever does not believe God has made him a liar,
negativepositive
because he has not believed in the testimony that God has borne concerning his Son.
And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
Whoever has the Son has life;
whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.
