Paul has previously argued for faith alone gospel by pointing the Galatians back to their conversion and asking the question "by works in the flesh, or faith, by the Spirit?" Paul now looks back further to their greatest forefather Abraham. He was saved "by works in the flesh or by faith, in the Spirit?" (Genesis 15:6) The Judaizers were appealing to their father Abraham and his observance of the law. "We are sons of Abraham. He was circumcised and so was his posterity. We are his sons and should follow in his footsteps." Paul too appeals to their father Abraham, but he calls the Galatians to recognize and imitate his faith, not his observance of old, stinky regulations. Paul argues the same, but sees Abraham differently. "Let us be sons of the faithful Abraham, not sons of the law-observing Abraham." So Abraham is, indeed, the father of God's people. But this is not because he is the biological father of the Jews but because he has spiritual posterity that has believed like him. Circumcission was the sign and seal of Abe's righteousness that belonged to him by faith. It was not a part of the righteousness. Romans 4 Joshua 24:2 Was the same gospel preached to Abraham?
