See y what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called z children of God; and so we are. The reason why a the world does not know us is that b it did not know him.
Behold what love the Father has given to us,
that we should be called children of God –
and we are!

Because of this, the world does not know us,
because it did not know Him.

Beloved, we are z God’s children c now, and what we will be d has not yet appeared; but we know that e when he appears 1 f we shall be like him, because g we shall see him as he is.
Beloved, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been revealed.
We have known that when He should appear, we will be like Him,
for we will see Him just as He is.
And everyone who h thus hopes in him i purifies himself as he is pure.
And every one having this hope in Him purifies himself,
just as that One is pure.

We, the elect, are born of God, a concept introduced in 1John 2:29, (all practicing righteousness are) ἐξ αὐτοῦ γεγέννηται, with the antecedent to the pronoun being Christ. [This concept then continues in 3:9, 4:7, 5:1,4,18] e.g. ( ὁ γεγεννημένος ἐκ τοῦ θεοῦ) or (ἐκ τοῦ θεοῦ γεγέννηται ) Who calls us the children of God? - The Father does ( " I will be a Father to you, and you shall be My sons and daughters, says the LORD Almighty," ) 2 Corinthians 6:18 - The Son does ( " But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God" ) John 1:12 - The Spirit does ( " The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God" ) Romans 8:16 Thus we are more than just called children of God, we are his children! 1 John 3:1) It is essential that we reflect and dwell on this blessed fact! The world is passing away (1 John 2:17), and cannot understand us (3:1), and in fact hates us! (3:13). We practice righteousness in Christ, dying to the world. We are hidden in Christ! (Colossians 3:3) But ( " If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar , and his word is not in us. " ) 1 John 1:10 We will not perfect righteousness until we are glorified with Christ, but we practice righteousness as we walk in Christ, as children of God. This is our hope and our great joy! One day we will see Him in glory, and we will be like Him, our practice made perfect! We hope NOT as the world hopes: we don't hope in our own strength, or in the best the world offers, or of fleeting wealth and happiness. We hope in the Lord, the God of all comfort. He is our rock .... Psalm 92:15 He is our shield .... Psalm 5:12 He is our strong tower... Proverbs 18:10 He alone is holy! Isaiah 5:16 He is coming again for His bride, His church! Isaiah 61:10
