Watch What You Say
Despite whatever else you may think and do, how you speak to others says much about how you view God, and– more importantly– how God views you. James provides us with a helpful check on whether or not our conduct is worthy before God. If you are not disciplined in how you speak, then your conduct is worth nothing to God. Why? Because an unbridled tongue, according to James, is a "restless evil, full of deadly poison" that expresses itself in cursing other people (James 3:8-9). This is offensive to God because all people are created in his image. On the other hand, a person who bridles his tongue is also able to bridle his whole body (James 3:2) and as a result keep himself "unstained from the world" (James 1:27). Such a person will also have a high regard for all those created in God's image, especially for those who are suffering and struggle to provide for themselves (e.g. widows and orphans). In other words, true and meaningful religion before God is characterized by purity of speech and compassion for the the poor and needy because they are image-bearers of God. Therefore, conduct yourselves in a way that is pure and undefiled before God by watching carefully what you say.
