Main Though t: When all the curses and blessings have come upon Israel and they are scattered throughout the ends of the earth, YHWH will give them a heart to turn back to him and he will bring them back if they turn back to him and obey him with all their hearts. Outline Ch. 29:2-9: Despite seeing the mighty acts of YHWH in delivering them from Egypt and leading them through the wilderness, he had not given that generation of Israelites a heart to understand, eyes to see or ears to hear. Therefore, they "must keep the words of this covenant" so that they will prosper. Ch. 29:10-15 - The entire community stands together before Moses to make a sworn covenant in order to become his people. Yet it is not only to those who are present, but also to those who are not present. Ch. 29:16-End - Remembering the detestable ways of Egypt and those lands through which they had come, they must beware lest someone's (someones') heart turns from YHWH and they become a poisonous root in the community, bearing ruinous fruit for the community. I. A. Prelude - Looking back (29:2-9) 1. Remembering how the Lord had delivered them from Egypt and led them through the wilderness, 2. Yet lacking a heart to understand, eyes to see or ears to hear 3. Israel must keep the words of the Covenant in order to prosperf B. Looking Around: Making a covenant before Moses (29:10-15) 1. All of Israel must stand before the Lord and confrim Moses' covenant in order to become the people of YHWH. 2. Yet the covenant is not to those present alone, but also to those who are not present C. Solemn Warning (29:16-29) 1. Beware of the one who turns to the gods of the nations around you lest they become a poisonous root to the community (16-21) 2. Result: YHWH's "anger, fury and great wrath" will come upon the land and the people will be cast out, so that the nations will marvel (22-29) D. Looking Ahead: Great Reversal in their Heart and Soul (30:1-10) 1. When all the curses have come upon them and they are in a foreign land: a. They will remember these words b. They will return to YHWH and obey him with all their heart and soul (1-2) 2. Then YHWH will turn the tables a. Restore them to the land, blessing them more than their fathers b. Circumcise their hearts, so that they (are able to) love him with all their heart and soul (cf. 10:?) 3. And they will return to the land a. YHWH will once again bless them in the land b. If they return to him with all their heart and soul
