We are not light; God is. We would be lying to say that we have no sin (6,8,10), but God cleanses us from our sin when we 1) walk in the light (7d) and 2) bring our sins into the light by confessing them. Exegetical questions: 1. Does John mean "confession of sin" in verse 7 when he says "walk in the light"? The context gives three pieces of evidence to suggest that John could mean confession of sin when he says "if we walk in the light". 1) The conditional statement, "if we say we have fellowship with him but walk in darkness, we lie..." (vs 6) is itself a false confession. Therefore, the coordinating proposition (vs 7) would be a true confession. In other words, if we say we have fellowship with God, but are concealing our sin, we lie. But if we confess our sin, we have fellowship with one another... 2) The result of the true confession (vs 7) is the same as that for confession (vs 9): "The blood of Jesus his son cleanses us from all sin". 3) It makes logical sense of the word fellowship . If we are concealing sin, we don't have true fellowship with God or with each other. If we walk in the light, revealing our sin through confession, we have fellowship with God and with each other. 4) Confession of sin is at least implicit in the context (vs. 9). 1A. What does John mean by his use of the word "light"? Light can either be defined as the source of light, or the illumination provided by the light. When speaking of the source, John is talking about God. We are not the light, but we see the world around us because the light shines onto it and illuninates it so that we can walk in it. vs. 5 "God is light" - God is the source of light. (see also Jn 1:4, 5, 7, 8, 9; 3:19, 20, 21; 8:12; 9:5; 12:36, 46; 1 Jn 1:5; 2:8; Rev. 22:5) vs. 7 "we walk in the light" seems to indicate that we walk in the illumnination provided by the light. (Jn 5:35 (of John the Baptist's teaching), 11:9, 10 (by antonymn); 12:35; 1 Jn 2:9, 10; Rev. 21:23, 24) Conclusion : John is not talking about confession of sin in 1 John 1:5 in particular. Although confession of sin would be a part of walking in the light (see verse 9), it is broader than that in verse 5 and should be taken to mean living a life illuminated by the person and work of Jesus Christ. Note: John is writing this in the wake of a church split in Ephesus as a result of heresy, so there would be understandable confusion about which group has true fellowship with God. This is the first of several "tests" John gives them.
