Central Idea This generation is in very bad shaped because of the opportunities it has had and ignored, therefore it will be judged harshly. Explanations The main situation was the request for a sign, and the rest of the passage is Jesus’ response. Like the previous pericope, this one seems to have some nested ideas with explanations. 41 and 42 are identical forms for two different examples. 43 through 45 contain series and progressions of events to add onto Jesus’ judgment of the current generation. Insights The arcing shows the identical nature of 41 and 42 well. The last verse seems to bring connection through the whole passage, though the description of events is very dissimilar.

Then some of the scribes and Pharisees said to Him, "Teacher, we want to see a sign from You."
But He answered and said to them, "An evil and adulterous generation craves for a sign;
and yet no sign will be given to it but the sign of Jonah the prophet;

for just as JONAH WAS THREE DAYS AND THREE NIGHTS IN THE BELLY OF THE SEA MONSTER,
so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
