Central Idea Even though people may struggle to follow Jesus, the winds and waves will follow him without hesitation. Explanations Faced with the situation of large crowds, Jesus' response was to leave by boat. This action progresses into several people wanting to continue to follow Jesus as a disciple. The simpler questions about following Jesus lead into an amazing story about what it is really like to follow Jesus. Insights In the past I think I missed how Jesus' action of wanting to leave the crowds actually sparked the discipleship questions. That connection seems like it may be beneficial to study more. Jesus' response are in reaction to several claiming to be more committed then they actually were. Jesus' responses showed the weaknesses in their claims. If the whole pericope is about following Jesus, it is ironic that the wind and waves would follow Jesus before people who would claim to be disciples.
