Central Idea No one expected John to do the work he was called to do, so it is not surprising that the people were not ready for the work of Jesus, either. Explanations Jesus begins with a progressive list of questions leading up to the answer to which he was hoping to lead his listeners. He then expounds on this concept by explaining exactly who John was. Jesus progresses through Scripture, teaching, world events, and prophecy which all point to the work of John. This paves the way for Jesus to voice a concern about the people’s response to both him and John through situations and surprising responses. Jesus compares himself to John and points out the opposite reactions. All this leads to the final ‘therefore’ of 19f; the truth will come out. Insights It was helpful to see how this passage build on each other, building to that last statement that wisdom is vindicated by her deeds.

As these men were going away,
Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John,
actionmanner
τί ἐξήλθατε εἰς τὴν ἔρημον θεάσασθαι;
"What did you go out into the wilderness to see?
κάλαμον ὑπὸ ἀνέμου σαλευόμενον;
A reed shaken by the wind?
ἀλλὰ τί ἐξήλθατε ἰδεῖν;
"But what did you go out to see?
ἄνθρωπον ἐν μαλακοῖς ἠμφιεσμένον;
A man dressed in soft clothing?
Those who wear soft clothing are in kings' palaces!

WHO WILL PREPARE YOUR WAY BEFORE YOU.'

"Truly I say to you, among those born of women there has not arisen anyone greater than John the Baptist!
Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven
is greater than he.

and violent men take it by force.

"For all the prophets and the Law prophesied until John.
"And if you are willing to accept it,
John himself is Elijah who was to come.
"He who has ears to hear,
let him hear.
inference
Τίνι δὲ ὁμοιώσω τὴν γενεὰν ταύτην;
"But to what shall I compare this generation?
It is like children sitting in the market places,
who call out to the other children,
and say, 'We played the flute for you,
and you did not dance;
situationresponse
we sang a dirge,
and you did not mourn.'
"For John came
neither eating
nor drinking,
and they say, 'He has a demon!'
"The Son of Man came
eating
and drinking,
and they say, 'Behold, a gluttonous man and a drunkard,
a friend of tax collectors and sinners!'
Yet wisdom is vindicated by her deeds."
