Central Idea Jesus responds to John’s question about being the Messiah by highlighting what is taking place in Jesus’ ministry. Explanations The main thrust of the pericope is the question by John and response from Jesus. The beginning is simply setting the scene. Jesus’ answer begins with an action – imperative command that something should happen. Jesus’ answer is then explained in light of what those reporting back to John should actually have seen and heard. The last verse is an emphatic “therefore” to summarize what Jesus is trying to say. Insights Verse four looks more interesting now that I have arced it. There are three pairs: answered/said, go/report, hear/see. Jesus’ answer is no simpler when arced.
