The Necessity of Love
If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.
Ἐὰν ταῖς γλώσσαις τῶν ἀνθρώπων λαλῶ καὶ τῶν ἀγγέλων,
If I would be speaking with the languages of men and of the angels,
Condition of 1c
ἀγάπην δὲ μὴ ἔχω,
but I would not be having love,
Contrast to 1a
γέγονα χαλκὸς ἠχῶν ἢ κύμβαλον ἀλαλάζον.
I have become a noisy gong or loud-wailing cymbal.
Assertion #1
And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.
καὶ ἐὰν ἔχω προφητείαν
And if I would be having prophecy
Conditions of 2e
καὶ εἰδῶ τὰ μυστήρια πάντα καὶ πᾶσαν τὴν γνῶσιν
and I would know all mysteries and all knowledge
καὶ ἐὰν ἔχω πᾶσαν τὴν πίστιν ὥστε ὄρη μεθιστάναι,
and if I would be having all faith to move mountains,
ἀγάπην δὲ μὴ ἔχω,
but I would not be having love

I am nothing.
Assertion #2
If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing.
κἂν ψωμίσω πάντα τὰ ὑπάρχοντά μου
And if I would give away all my things

and if I would hand over my body in order to be burned
ἀγάπην δὲ μὴ ἔχω,

The Description of Love
Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant
Ἡ ἀγάπη μακροθυμεῖ, χρηστεύεται ἡ ἀγάπη,
The love is being patient, the love is being kind,

οὐ ζηλοῖ, [ἡ ἀγάπη]
The love is not jealous,

οὐ περπερεύεται,
it is not boasting,
οὐ φυσιοῦται,
it is not being arrogant,
or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful;
οὐκ ἀσχημονεῖ,
it is not being indecent,
οὐ ζητεῖ τὰ ἑαυτῆς,
it is not not seeking its own,
οὐ παροξύνεται,
it is not provoked,
οὐ λογίζεται τὸ κακόν,
it is not accounting evil,
it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth.
οὐ χαίρει ἐπὶ τῇ ἀδικίᾳ,
it is not rejoicing on the unrighteous things,
συγχαίρει δὲ τῇ ἀληθείᾳ•
but it is rejoicing with the truth;

Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
πάντα στέγει, πάντα πιστεύει, πάντα ἐλπίζει, πάντα ὑπομένει.

The Superiority of Love
Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away.
Ἡ ἀγάπη οὐδέποτε πίπτει•
The love is never failing (lit. falling);

εἴτε δὲ προφητεῖαι, καταργηθήσονται•
but whether (there is ) prophecy, it will be abolished;

For we know in part and we prophesy in part,
ἐκ μέρους γὰρ γινώσκομεν καὶ ἐκ μέρους προφητεύομεν•
For we are knowing from a part and we are prophesying from a part;

but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away.
ὅταν δὲ ἔλθῃ τὸ τέλειον,
but whenever the perfect thing would come,

When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways.

I was speaking as a child, I was thinking as a child, I was thinking as a child;
ὅτε γέγονα ἀνήρ,
When I have become a man,
κατήργηκα τὰ τοῦ νηπίου.
I have abolished the things of a child.
For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.
βλέπομεν γὰρ ἄρτι διʼ ἐσόπτρου ἐν αἰνίγματι,
For we are seeing now through a mirror in a riddle,

τότε δὲ πρόσωπον πρὸς πρόσωπον•
but then, face to face;
ἄρτι γινώσκω ἐκ μέρους,
Now I am knowing from a part,

τότε δὲ ἐπιγνώσομαι καθὼς καὶ ἐπεγνώσθην.
but then, I will come to know just as also I was fully known.
So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.
Νυνὶ δὲ μένει πίστις, ἐλπίς, ἀγάπη, τὰ τρία ταῦτα•
But now faith, hope, and love is remaining, these three things;
Conclusion of 8-12
μείζων δὲ τούτων ἡ ἀγάπη.
but the greatest of these (is) the love.
