I found this LAB particularly challenging and complex. But it was immensely rewarding to tie several ideas together such as obedience and faith, truth and the gospel, new birth and love, loving one another and holy conduct. I could then see how much my mind needs to be renewed away from thinking that I can obediently love others, to moving more towards faith and hope in the gospel, in Jesus Christ, in the Word of God, in the new birth, and out of these the overflow which leads to loving one another. The obedience is the act of believing, trusting, having faith in. And it is from this trust, that then there is that connection to the power of the Word, the strength of the resurrection of Christ, the truth of God saving me. And out of this background, comes love for one another. See accompanying google doc: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1HldnH7M2pYSX8VQcl-jnOZmM1ydg-FfBa_IU-iZTdKE/edit?ts=5649aee3&pli=1 Characters Elect Exiles God All Flesh Context: Peter's call to be holy 1 Peter 1:13-21 Holy conduct expressed in loving one another From a pure heart 1 Peter 1:22-25 The special place of loving one another 1 Peter 4:7-8 Elect Exiles (Green Rectangle and highlight) Observations To love one another, coming from purified souls v.22 Souls are purified by obedience to the truth v.22 obedience to the truth results in loving one another v.22 this truth is the gospel and obedience is faith and hope in it v.22 (see below under Questions/Thoughts/Examination) this love is to be from a pure heart v.22 the elect exiles have been born again v.23 and they are born again of imperishable not perishable seed v.23 they are born again through the Word of God v.23 The Word, that is the good news, has been preached to them Questions/Thoughts/ Examination Why does obedience to the truth mean faith and hope in the gospel, and not obeying the command to love? Because v.22 shows love is the outcome of obedience, so obedience has to be to something else a. Gal 5:6 (faith is working through love) and 1 Tim 1:5 (Paul's goal is love comes from sincere faith) b. Through faith, souls are purified and a person is born again. See In 1 Peter 1:23 being born again and being purified v.22 is the same thing. c. Truth in v.22 is the good news in v. 23-25. Obeying good news is by believing it, having faith in it. Thus to have trust and faith in Christ. 3. Obedience to the gospel indicating trust, hope, faith in gospel 1 Peter 4:17 . Those who do not obey are unbelievers, those who have no faith in the gospel. 4. Hearts are cleansed/purified by faith Acts 15:8-9 . Faith unites us to Christ and Christ is our purity, and faith has a sanctifying and purifying effects by driving out other unclean things 5. Faith and hope in God v.21 - obedience and having purified souls v.22 1 Peter 1:21 a. faith and hope in the gospel purifies souls in two ways i. by justification, Christ is our purity ii. by the outcome, overflowing of loving one another, and other good works, holy conduct For more discussion, see the google doc https://docs.google.com/document/d/1HldnH7M2pYSX8VQcl-jnOZmM1ydg-FfBa_IU-iZTdKE/edit?ts=5649aee3&pli=1 Summary The elect exiles are to love one another, a part of the holy conduct they are to have. They are able to love out of obedience to the truth, that is to have faith and hope in the gospel, and out of their new birth. God (Blue Rectangle and highlight) Observations God's Word is living v.23 God's Word is abiding, enduring v.23 God's Word is eternal, will never fade or perish v.25 God's Word is the good news v.25 God's Word is preached v.25 Questions/Thoughts There is something about God's Word being preached that has such power. Do I trust in this power? Summary God's Word is precious, it has life, endurance, it lasts, is eternal, is the good news and is to be preached. All Flesh (Brown Rectangle and highlight) Observations All flesh, defined as, human are as temporary and unenduring as grass v.24 Human accomplishments and works, e.g. glory, are like the flower of the grass v.24 Grass does not last, it withers v.24 Flowers will fall v.24 Human accomplishments, glory, will fade away v.24 This fading away is compared to the enduring-ness of the Word of God. In comparison to that, it is like grass and flower of the grass. v.24-25 Questions/Thoughts How much do I know, understand, realise this short life of all flesh and it's glory? If I did, I would not be so driven and enamored to find life through human accomplishments. Summary Compared to the Word of God, all flesh, that is all human endeavor, is as nothing. Take away I've often wondered how I could love better. Through this very helpful LAB and the biblearc and google doc, I now better realise that in order for me to love better, I must obey the truth, that is, have faith, hope in the gospel. The power of the gospel, what God has done (Father, Son and Spirit), the new birth that was brought about, the great hope for the future, that great security -- all of these will lead to loving others well. What I would like to do then, is to further examine and study the truth, the gospel, and to be more aware of the need for faith and trust and hope, and to pray for and live out that faith and trust and hope. I would like to preach to myself the gospel.
