-Jesus is warning us that it is such a great deal to cause others to sin or to stumble. We can both be the cause to make someone else stumble, or the cause to make ourselves stumble, if we don’t guard our hearts. -Proverbs 4:23-27 tells us that guarding your heart means watching out for what your hands touch, what your feet chases after and what your eyes see. Jesus is so intentionally radical in this matter that He tells us that one who causes his brother to sin should be thrown into the sea (that’s not compassionate at all); and He says, if that is not enough for us—maybe we can excuse ourselves in our minds saying that we haven’t been the cause for anyone to stumble—we are still warned, we are still in danger of making ourselves to stumble being deceived by our own heart. He is likewise very radical when He tells us the solution, “ cut it off , and tear it out .” Both solutions are pretty painful, yet conditional to make it to heaven. Whatever that’s taking your attraction, your feelings, your desires, your senses away from Christ; you must cut it off and tear it out. If something stands between you and Christ will finally send you to hell. -Lord, give us undivided hearts that touch, chase after and see the majesty and transcendence of your Son.
