-There came the Pharisees and scribes, as verses 15-19 say that they were seeking to destroy Him for they were afraid because people marveled at Jesus. And the idea they came up with was asking Jesus in whose authority He was doing and saying all those things. Knowing the real motivation of the question, Jesus answers them with another question. This question would set the tone to reveal their true heart state of unbelief. Their motivation was to destroy Jesus, not to believe on Him. And that was exactly their same motivation toward John the Baptist, but Pilate solved their problem by killing him in prison. -By declaring Jesus that they did not know where the baptism (ministry) of John was, they implied that they were not in the position to either assess if Jesus’ ministry came from heaven of from man. Their standard of assessment based on their knowledge was surpassed by Jesus question. They were afraid of losing power and prestige of the people so they aimed to destroy the Son of God, but their own standard was faulty before God and even before them.

And they came again to Jerusalem.
Normal 0 MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 Llegaron de nuevo a Jerusalén;
And as he was walking in the temple,
y cuando Jesús andaba por el templo,
the chief priests and the scribes and the elders came to him,
se le acercaron los principales sacerdotes, los escribas y los ancianos,
and they said to him, "By what authority are you doing these things, or who gave you this authority to do them?"

Jesus said to them, "I will ask you one question; answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things.

Was the baptism of John from heaven or from man? Answer me."
Normal 0 MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 El bautismo de Juan, ¿era del cielo o de los hombres? Respondedme.
And they discussed it with one another,
Normal 0 MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 Y ellos discurrían entre sí,
saying, "If we say, 'From heaven,'
diciendo: Si decimos: “Del cielo”,
he will say, 'Why then did you not believe him?'
El dirá: “Entonces, ¿por qué no le creísteis?”
But shall we say, 'From man'?"--

they were afraid of the people,
Pero temían a la multitud,
for they all held that John really was a prophet.
porque todos consideraban que Juan verdaderamente había sido un profeta.
