-John presents us with a situation in which Jesus took opportunity, as He did many times to use it to teach His disciples about a spiritual matter. This one was a very important one. He cautioned them, “Watch out, beware.” Jesus used the leaven as an illustration or a shadow of the hypocrisy of the Pharisees and Herod. The disciples did not understand that the Master was speaking in spiritual terms. They were set up on earth as their default language and life. -God gave us eyes and ears in our bodies to see and hear material things, but as John Piper says the primary reason why He gave us these members of our bodies was to be a shadow of a greater reality. God gave us eyes and ears in our hearts to see and hear the spiritual things, to perceive Him, to understand His language (v. 17) and to remember His great deeds (v. 18-19). -Having your heart hardened means not to see, to hear, nor to remember what God had conquered for us in Jesus. So a good exercise for keeping us from hardened hearts is to try to look hard and hear with attention—I should say—meditation, and to make an effort to remember what our great Savior has done for the glory of His grace to us through Jesus. -Father, give us eyes to see and ears to hear, to perceive, to understand and to remember what a great Savior we have in Jesus.
