-Again Jesus was traveling from one place to another to bring the news of the coming of the Kingdom and to set prisoners free from the bondage of sin and sicknesses. He came to the Sea of Galilee and there a man who was deaf and had a speech impediment was brought to Him. -Different from others that already have come to Jesus for help, these men begged Jesus to lay His hand on the deaf man. Apparently they had not heard about the woman who was healed just by touching the Lord, and Jairo’s daughter who was healed just with the Lord’s words of blessing upon her. But Jesus didn’t refuse to give them what they begged, even though their faith was not that greater. He receives everyone that comes to Him. He is eager to save, to open blinded eyes to see Him, to release tongues to praise Him, to set prisoners free from the bondage of sin and make them slaves of the truth. -Jesus took him aside from the crowd. I have no idea why He did this, but I am sure there are wise and godly reasons. And there He put his fingers into his ears, and after spitting touched his tongue. Note that the men begged Him to lay his hand on the deaf man, and Jesus responded in conformity with their faith. They wanted a touch, Jesus touched him. This tells me that our Savior cares for our feelings; He is willing to descend to our weakness. The men confined Jesus power to touching the sick man, but instead of revealing their weak faith, He receives them and acts kind and graciously. What a wonderful and compassionate Savior we have in Jesus! -Jesus prayed to the Father to heal the man. He is the Son of God and still He prays to the Father to open this man’s ears and tongue. He said “ Ephphatha .” O how sweet these words may have been for this deaf man. I think this man could hear Jesus words of healing because the verse says in Spanish, “and his ears were opened instantly.” There was not a second between these wonderful words being pronounced and this man’s healing taking place. They were bound by Jesus power and love. Now this man could also speak without impediment to praise the One who saved him. And the next verses tell us that no one could stop these men, including the one that was healed to proclaim zealously what Jesus had done to him. This is the same experience for every true believer. When Jesus pronounced our Ephphatha He opened our eyes, ears and tongue to his majesty, transcendence, power and love, and now we can’t stop praising Him and proclaim what He has done for us. And we can say with these men, “He has done all things well. He even makes us hear and speak.” Praise be to Him forever. I love you, Jesus. Make me love you more for your glory and my benefit.
