-This passage opens a new perspective of how Jesus sees those who trust in something else, but Himself. It is an illustration of 1 Corinthians 13:3 and what it means to God, “if I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing.” Clearly this young man, just as all of us, take God’s gifts and enthrone them as idols in our hearts—money, food, riches, resources, fame, admiration, etc., displacing God to his rightful place. We want the gifts but not the Giver; we are so fools as to try to find satisfaction for our souls which are immaterial with material things. -God does not want obedience to the commandments, the letter of the law, but to love Him and obey His commandments out of that love, the spirit of the law. How easy is for us to fulfill all those commandments that are suppose to come from the heart—from the love of the Father which enables us to love others—but many times come from bad motives of praise, fame, name, admiration because the reward is visible here and now, but how difficult is to believe God, to love Him as much as we ought, to love Him with all our hearts and to have no other gods before Him. Just as this young man, we love and trust other things before God. -But there is hope, seeing with pain that this man was despising Him for other things, full of love, Jesus talks to the man trying to persuade him of his true master and his true state of heart. There is forgiveness in Jesus, but this man refused it because he loved something else. -Salvation is impossible for man to conquer but is in God’s compassionate hands to give away. -Following Jesus means gain mixed with persecution in this world, but an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled and unfading in the next. Jesus, let us see your compassionate heart, And make us to love You with all our hearts. Displace every idol from our souls, And be enthroned there forever more.
