question: what is the "that" in v.1a? answer: the "that" is most likely referring to Jesus. John is talking about Jesus (his physical body, etc, v.1) and how [Jesus] was made manifest to us (v.2) question: what is the "word of life?" (v.1f) answer: the "word of life" in v.1 is also Jesus. V.2 flows right into explaining the word of life by sating it was made manifest, therefore, Jesus fulfills that description. insight: the "word of life" seems to be the subject of the entire first 4 verses insight: v.1f seems to be an "aside" in that John is letting the audience know what he is talking about insight: note how John claims the life was made manifest to him, now he seeks to help make it manifest in others (vv.3-4) question: is "eternal life" (2d) separate from "word of life" (v.1f)? answer: I do think "eternal life" and "word of life" seem to be different ideas in that John says that he "saw" the word of life (Jesus), and then speaks of the eternal life (which comes via Jesus)

That which was from the beginning,
which we have heard,
which we have seen with our eyes,
which we looked upon
and have touched with our hands,
concerning the word of life--
the life was made manifest,
and we have seen it,
and testify to it
and proclaim to you the eternal life,
which was with the Father
and was made manifest to us--

and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ.
And we are writing these things
so that our joy may be complete.
