One Sentence Summary of Ephesians: God has predestined (1:4, 5, 11; 2:10) all things to be united in Christ, therefore believers must walk (2:2, 10; 4:1, 17; 5:2, 8, 15) in the unity of the Spirit and in the knowledge of the Son (4:11–16; Cf. 4:1–6). Structure of the book: I have specifically structured my summary in two parts to reflect what I believe is the two-part structure of Ephesians. The first part corresponds to the first three chapters—largely indicative—which prepare the way for and inform the latter three chapters—largely imperative. Thus, “God has predestined all things to be united in Christ” corresponds to Ephesians 1:3–3:21 , and “therefore believers must walk in the unity of the Spirit and the knowledge of the Son” corresponds to Ephesians 4:1–6:20. Paul introduces himself in 1:1–2 and closes with final greetings in 6:21–24. Structure of 1:3–14: The governing verb (which is no verb) is a command (a cohortative of sorts) that “blessing” be to the God and Father of Jesus Christ. This structure is what governs the next 10 or so verses. Jesus Christ is then unpacked and modified, for Christ is "in whom" we have been blessed "with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places." Just as he "chose us," God also blessed us, and this "just as" language governs the person in whom we were blessed (which states how these two thoughts are connected). In whom? In "him" (v. 1:4b), and "before the foundation of the world,"and for the purpose of being "holy" and "blameless" before God in love. The means by which God "chose us" is "by having predestined us" (action/manner, adverbial participle) for adoption as sons. He predestined us "through Christ" and "according to the purpose of his will" for the sake of "the praise of the is glorious grace," grace with which God has blessed us in his Beloved Son. Beloved is then unpacked with three modifying clauses, which structures verses 6-14: (1) The Beloved Son is he in whom we have redemption (1:7–10). (2) The Beloved Son is he in whom we have received inheritance (1:11–12). (3) The Beloved Son is he in whom we have been sealed with the promised Holy Spirit (1:13–14). Question: How is "redemption" distinct from "inheritance" and "sealing"? These seem to be overlapping in my mind. The overriding verb seems to be "blessing," which is parallel to "choosing," choosing by means of "predestining for adoption as sons," in Christ, the one in whom we have redemption, inheritance, and have been sealed with the Spirit by believing in the gospel. The logic above seems to closely tie "blessing" and the sovereign predestined choosing of God in Christ through the Spirit, which gives words to why I felt that this was such a dominant theme, and the summarizing theme of the first part of the book of Ephesians (but couldn't quite articulate myself so the last time we met).
