One Sentence Summary: The second Adam demonstrates his superiority over the first in his serpent-crushing obedience to the Father (Cf. Gen 3:15). OR The second Adam tends the garden of redemption/new creation by obediently removing serpentine opposition (pending his finished work on the cross). OR Whereas the first Adam fell before Satan, Satan falls before the God-man, second Adam, and anointed Messiah, who is appointed to crush the head of the serpent in his obedience to the Father. OR [Typology] The second Adam tends the garden by which his death will (1) remove serpentine opposition, and (2) give birth to much fruit (John 12:24). Jesus is the planting of the Lord by which all who participate in him will flourish in the fullness of God's eternal life given to those who trust in Jesus. --- Explanation: Second Adam typology is clearly present here. First, John explicitly mentions a garden, into which Jesus and his disciples enter. Satan also, having entered into Judas in John 13:23, slithers into the garden in order to deceive and destroy the second Adam, as he had success against the first Adam. Jesus as the second Adam demonstrates his natural superiority over the first Adam, for he declares simply, "I AM," and his foes must fall prostrate before him. Jesus demonstrates his utter obedience to God by (1) entering the garden in the knowledge of all the suffering that would come upon him (18:4), and so subjecting himself to the persecution of Satan himself, (2) fulfilling Scripture by guarding those entrusted to him (18:8-9), and (3) faithfully drinking the cup given him by the Father (18:13). --- Structure: I struggle to see any clear structural movements within the text outside of some level of progression towards a climax. There are several background, explanatory clauses. There are several "ouns" (lit. "therefore") that seems to move the text forward. These seem more to be narrative movement than actual logical inferences, through I'm open to be persuaded otherwise.

What's the significance of Jesus's movement to the garden after his intimate prayer to the Father concerning himself, his glory, and his disciples?
