STRUCTURE Background: Paul the Apostle of Jesus Christ writing to the Ephesian church - has so far written benediction (praise to God) (1:3-14), prayer (1:15-23), doctrine (2:1-3:13), prayer (3:1, 14-19), and benediction (3:20-21). Paul prayed that the believers would be rooted and grounded in love (God’s unshakable love interpretation) that they might comprehend the with, the depth, the hight, and the breath of this love at work in their midst, and to know (by experience) the love of Christ which exceeds anyones understanding (a love deeper, wider, higher, greater than anyone can comprehend). The text Therefore, ties back everyone previously stated. Because of God’s glory, God’s grace in saving you, and revealing Himself to you, and working through you, and His love for you - Therefore - walk in a manner worthy of your calling to follow Jesus! That is with humility, gentleness, bearing with one another (as Jesus bears with you - sinner!), and guard the unity of the Spirit. (1-3) FOR (added) There is one body (the Church - God’s holy Temple and dwelling place), one Spirit, one hope, one Lord, …, and one Father over all. (4-6) He gave grace in different measures to people that He might fill all things (7-10) this is (Jesus who came down to earth!) He is filling all things by giving apostles, prophets, evangelists, shepherds, teachers - to equip the saints, that we may have unity of faith and knowledge of Christ - the Redeemer! That se may grow into the fullness of Christ. (11-13) So taht we may no longer be children tossed to and fro by waves of doctrine, but grow in every way into Christ who holds all the joints together, that the body builds itself up in love.
I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called,
with all humility and gentleness, with patience,
bearing with one another in love,
being eager to guard the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
series
actionmanner
(FOR the reason why we should walk worthy our calling and guard the unity of the Spirit ) There is one body
and one Spirit--
just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call--
comparison
one Lord,
one faith,
one baptism,
one God and Father of all,
who is over all and through all and in all.
ideaexplanation
ground
Now grace was given to each one of us
according to the measure of Christ's gift.
(Now let me explain to you) Therefore it says, "When he ascended on high
he led a host of captives,
and he gave gifts to men."
progression
temporal
(In saying, "He ascended," what does it mean?
except that he ( who ascended) also descended into the lower regions, the earth. He who descended is the one who also ascended far above all the heavens,
questionanswer
t hat he might fill all things.)
actionpurpose
(He does this b y) And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers,
to equip the saints
for the work of ministry,
for building up the body of Christ,
until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God,
to mature manhood,
to the measure of maturity, namely, the fullness of Christ,
so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes.
Rather, speaking the truth in love,
we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ,
from whom the whole body, joined and held together
by every suppling joint, according to the effective working of each part
so makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.
