I think the central idea is a command to set our hope fully on the future benefits of our salvation, when Christ returns. This is a major encouragement for suffering believers like the ones that Peter was writing to. We can have the inexpressibel joy that Peter talks about even in the middle of trials, because we know that we have a great salvation. The result of this hope and joy is holy living. Here is my paraphrase of the passage: Although you have neither seen Jesus in the past or prestent, you love Him, believe in Him, and rejoice with inexpressible joy because you are receiving the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls. When the Spirit of Christ spoke through the prophets about this salvation, (predicting the sufferings of Jesus and the glory that would follow) the prophets wanted to know when this would happen and what person would accomplish these things. However, God revealed that they were serving us in the message of the gospel (which has been preached to you by the Holy Spirit). Angels long to look into the great truths of this gospel. Therefore, (since the gospel has been revealed to you, and you will receive the salvation of your souls) set your hope fully on the benefits of your salvation which will be revealed when Jesus Christ returns.Do this with sober minds, preparing for action. Be holy, like the sons and daughters of the Holy Lord Jesus Christ who called you.
