The God who makes Himself known. 1. Who God is. (verses 1-2) A. He is Eternal-"In the beginning was the Word", "He was in the beginning" B. He is Triune-"the Word was with God and the Word was God" (See 10:30, 14:8-11, 14:15-18, 16:7-15) C. He is Complete. 17:5 D. He is Relational. 17:24 2. How God makes himself known (verses 3-18) A. Through creation (verses 3-5) i. All things were made through Him. Every thing we might see is a thing created by the Word. (verse 3) ii. The life that is in the Word gives light to all men. All men live by the knowledge of God in creation, even though it is suppressed. (See Romans 1:18-25) iii. The light gives meaning, order, and purpose to the creation. iv. Therefore, since God is both the Creator of all things and the One who gives order and purpose to the created things, I conclude that the creation reflects the character of God. God has made Himself known through His creation. (see also Psalm 19:1-6, Isaiah 11:9, Genesis 1:3-5, 14-15, Revelation 21:23-25) B. Through the witness (verses 6-8) C. Through salvation (verses 9-13) (See also 4:23, 6:37, 44-46) He opens blind eyes (ch 9), causes people to be born again (ch 3), chooses them (ch 15), draws them irresistably (ch 6), makes Himself known to those who love Him (ch 14), D. Through Jesus Christ (verses 14-18) We receive grace by knowing God in Christ This is not a complete exposition of the passage, but as I've studied the gospel of John, I think this is clearly what is being communicated here. God is a God who reveals Himself, and He is the one who is initiating the relationship with His creatures.

In the beginning was the Word,
In the beginning was the Word,
and the Word was with God,
and the Word was with God,
and the Word was God.
and the Word was God.
He was in the beginning with God.
He was in the beginning with God.
ideaexplanation
All things came into being through Him,
All things were made through him,
and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.
and without him was not any thing made that was made.
negativepositive
In Him was life,
In him was life,
and the life was the Light of men.
and the life was the light of men.
The Light shines in the darkness,
The light shines in the darkness,
and the darkness did not comprehend it.
and the darkness has not overcome it.
progression
There came a man sent from God, whose name was John.
There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
He came as a witness, to testify about the Light, so that all might believe through him. He was not the Light, but he came to testify about the Light.
He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light.
actionpurpose
There was the true Light which, coming into the world, enlightens every man.
The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.
He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. He came to His own, and those who were His own did not receive Him.
He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him.
situationresponse
But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.
But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.
And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
John testified about Him and cried out, saying, "This was He of whom I said, 'He who comes after me has a higher rank than I, for He existed before me.'"
(John bore witness about him, and cried out, "This was he of whom I said, 'He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.'")
For of His fullness we have all received, and grace upon grace.
And from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.
For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ.
For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
ground
No one has seen God at any time; the only begotten God who is in the bosom of the Father, He has explained Him.
No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father's side, he has made him known.
