True Repentance A. David knows that God is a merciful God (verse 1) B. David has a right knowledge of his sin (verses 2-6) 1. it is againt God, and deserves judgment 2. David has a sin nature; he has been a sinner from birth 3. God had taught him truth in his heart; he had not sinned out of ignorance, but inspite of the knowledge he had. Also, God knew his heart. Comments: We must understand that our sin is against God and that it deserves His judgment. We have dishonored him and exalted ourselves. We have worshiped other gods and belittled the true and living God. Not only that, it is our nature to do so. We have not acted out of character when we sin. We are born sinners and when we sin, we are acting out of our natural tendency away from God and towards self-rule and self-worship. Finally, we are guilty because we sin with knowledge. All of us have knowledge of right and wrong either through the Bible or through natural revelation. C. David asks for the right things (verses 7-12) 1. He asks to be cleansed (vs 7) 2. He asks for joy (vs 8) 3. He asks for forgiveness (vs9) 4. He asks for a right heart (vs 10) 5. He asks for a restored relationship with God (vss 11-12) i. to be in the presence of God (11a) ii. to have the Holy Spirit (11b) iii. to have the joy of God's salvation (12a) iv. to be led and helped by God's grace (12b) D. David has the right ultimate purpose in mind (verses 13-15) 1. He will teach other sinners to return(repent) to God (vs 13) 2. He will sing of God's righteousness (vs 14) 3. He will declare God's praise (vs 15) E. David knows what pleases God (verses 16-17) 1. Not sacrifices (vs 16) 2. A contrite heart (vs 17) Comments: The reason David praises God and sings of God's righteousness is because (vs 16a begins with "for") God does not delight in sacrifice or burnt offerings, but a broken spirit. A heart that is broken over sin is the thing that God will not despise. God is not like other pagan gods who exact some kind of payment from the people who repent. There is no payment that can be made. A heart that is truly broken over personal sin is forgiven because of God's own righteousness, displayed perfectly in His own Son's cross. This whole Psalm is David's response to Nathan's correction. David showed true repentence in response to Nathan showing him his sin against God. This is the character of a true believer, being influenced by the Holy Spirit, when confronted with sin. Jesus said we should expect repentence from true believers (Matthew 18:15-20)

For the choir director. A Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet came to him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba.
To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet went to him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba.
Be gracious to me,
Have mercy on me,
O God, according to Your lovingkindness;
O God, according to your steadfast love;
actionmanner
According to the greatness of Your compassion
according to your abundant mercy
blot out my transgressions.
blot out my transgressions.
ideaexplanation
Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity
Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity,
And cleanse me from my sin.
and cleanse me from my sin!
series
For I know my transgressions,
For I know my transgressions,
And my sin is ever before me.
and my sin is ever before me.
Against You, You only, I have sinned
Against you, you only, have I sinned
And done what is evil in Your sight,
and done what is evil in your sight,
So that You are justified when You speak
so that you may be justified in your words
And blameless when You judge.
and blameless in your judgment.
actionpurpose
Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity,
Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity,
And in sin my mother conceived me.
and in sin did my mother conceive me.
Behold, You desire truth in the innermost being,
Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being,
And in the hidden part You will make me know wisdom.
and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart.
ground
Purify me with hyssop,
Purge me with hyssop,
and I shall be clean;
and I shall be clean;
actionresult
Wash me,
wash me,
and I shall be whiter than snow.
and I shall be whiter than snow.
Make me to hear joy and gladness,
Let me hear joy and gladness;
Let the bones which You have broken rejoice.
let the bones that you have broken rejoice.
Hide Your face from my sins
Hide your face from my sins,
And blot out all my iniquities.
and blot out all my iniquities.
Create in me a clean heart, O God,
Create in me a clean heart, O God,
And renew a steadfast spirit within me.
and renew a right spirit within me.
Do not cast me away from Your presence
Cast me not away from your presence,
And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.
and take not your Holy Spirit from me.
Restore to me the joy of Your salvation
Restore to me the joy of your salvation,
And sustain me with a willing spirit.
and uphold me with a willing spirit.
Then I will teach transgressors Your ways,
Then I will teach transgressors your ways,
And sinners will be converted to You.
and sinners will return to you.
Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God,
Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God,
the God of my salvation;
O God of my salvation,
Then my tongue will joyfully sing of Your righteousness.
and my tongue will sing aloud of your righteousness.
O Lord, open my lips,
O Lord, open my lips,
That my mouth may declare Your praise.
and my mouth will declare your praise.
For You do not delight in sacrifice,
For you will not delight in sacrifice,
otherwise I would give it;
or I would give it;
You are not pleased with burnt offering.
you will not be pleased with a burnt offering.
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit;
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit;
A broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.
a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.
