Ephesians 5:15-33

The unity in Christian households, expressed in wives submitting to husbands and husbands submitting to wives, is an outflow of being filled with the Spirit, and a reflection of walking carefully.

Βλέπετε οὖν ἀκριβῶς πῶς περιπατεῖτε

Therefore, carefully consider how you live,

μὴ ὡς ἄσοφοι ἀλλʼ ὡς σοφοί,

not as unwise but as wise,

making the most of the time,

ὅτι αἱ ἡμέραι πονηραί εἰσιν.

for "these days are evil" (cf. Gen. 47:9; Ps. 49:5; Amos 5:13; Eph. 6:13).

διὰ τοῦτο μὴ γίνεσθε ἄφρονες,

Because of this, do not become foolish,

ἀλλὰ συνίετε τί τὸ θέλημα τοῦ κυρίου.

but understand what is the will of the Lord.

and so always giving thanks for everything to God the Father in the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ;

and also [be filled with the Spirit] by submitting to one another in reverence for Christ -

wives to your own husbands as to the Lord;

ὅτι ἀνήρ ἐστιν κεφαλὴ τῆς γυναικὸς

for the husband is the head of the wife

just as Christ is the head of the Church,

αὐτὸς σωτὴρ τοῦ σώματος•

himself being the Savior of the Body.

ἀλλʼ ὡς ἡ ἐκκλησία ὑποτάσσεται τῷ Χριστῷ,

Indeed, as the Church submits to Christ,

οὕτως καὶ αἱ γυναῖκες τοῖς ἀνδράσιν ἐν παντί.

in the same way also wives to their husbands in everything.

Οἱ ἄνδρες, ἀγαπᾶτε τὰς γυναῖκας,

Husbands, love your wives

καθὼς καὶ ὁ Χριστὸς ἠγάπησεν τὴν ἐκκλησίαν

just as even Christ loved the Church

καὶ ἑαυτὸν παρέδωκεν ὑπὲρ αὐτῆς,

and gave himself up on her behalf,

ἵνα αὐτὴν ἁγιάσῃ

so that he would sanctify her

καθαρίσας τῷ λουτρῷ τοῦ ὕδατος ἐν ῥήματι,

by having cleansed her through the washing of water with the word;

ἵνα παραστήσῃ αὐτὸς ἑαυτῷ ἔνδοξον τὴν ἐκκλησίαν,

doing this so that he would present the glorious Church to himself -

μὴ ἔχουσαν σπίλον ἢ ῥυτίδα ἤ τι τῶν τοιούτων,

her "not having a spot, wrinkle" (Ex. 12:5), or any such thing -

ἀλλʼ ἵνα ᾖ ἁγία καὶ ἄμωμος.

but as holy and without blemish.

οὕτως ὀφείλουσιν [καὶ] οἱ ἄνδρες ἀγαπᾶν τὰς ἑαυτῶν γυναῖκας ὡς τὰ ἑαυτῶν σώματα.

In the same way, husbands are obligated to love their own wives as their own bodies.

ὁ ἀγαπῶν τὴν ἑαυτοῦ γυναῖκα ἑαυτὸν ἀγαπᾷ.

He who loves his own wife loves himself.

Οὐδεὶς γάρ ποτε τὴν ἑαυτοῦ σάρκα ἐμίσησεν

For no one ever hated his own flesh,

ἀλλʼ ἐκτρέφει καὶ θάλπει αὐτήν,

but nourishes and cherishes it,

καθὼς καὶ ὁ Χριστὸς τὴν ἐκκλησίαν,

just as even Christ to the Church,

ὅτι μέλη ἐσμὲν τοῦ σώματος αὐτοῦ.

because we are members of his body.

ἀντὶ τούτου καταλείψει ἄνθρωπος [τὸν] πατέρα καὶ [τὴν] μητέρα

"For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother,

καὶ προσκολληθήσεται πρὸς τὴν γυναῖκα αὐτοῦ,

and will be devoted to his wife;

καὶ ἔσονται οἱ δύο εἰς σάρκα μίαν.

and the two will be one flesh" (Gen. 2:24).

This is a great mystery,

ἐγὼ δὲ λέγω εἰς Χριστὸν καὶ εἰς τὴν ἐκκλησίαν.

but I'm saying it's about Christ and the Church.

πλὴν καὶ ὑμεῖς οἱ καθʼ ἕνα, ἕκαστος τὴν ἑαυτοῦ γυναῖκα οὕτως ἀγαπάτω ὡς ἑαυτόν,

In any case, you also, you all as one, each of you love your own wife in this manner as himself,

ἡ δὲ γυνὴ ἵνα φοβῆται τὸν ἄνδρα.

and that the wife may respect her husband.
