Καὶ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῇ τρίτῃ γάμος ἐγένετο ἐν Κανὰ τῆς Γαλιλαίας,
On the third day, there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee,
καὶ ἦν ἡ μήτηρ τοῦ Ἰησοῦ ἐκεῖ•
and Jesus' mother was there.
ἐκλήθη δὲ καὶ ὁ Ἰησοῦς καὶ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ εἰς τὸν γάμον.
Jesus was also invited to the wedding with his disciples.

And when the wine ran out,
λέγει ἡ μήτηρ τοῦ Ἰησοῦ πρὸς αὐτόν•
Jesus' mother said to him,
οἶνον οὐκ ἔχουσιν.

Jesus said to them,
γεμίσατε τὰς ὑδρίας ὕδατος.
"Fill the water jars."
καὶ ἐγέμισαν αὐτὰς ἕως ἄνω.
So they filled them up to the top.

Then he said to them,
ἀντλήσατε νῦν
"Now draw some out
καὶ φέρετε τῷ ἀρχιτρικλίνῳ•
and bring it to the master of the feast."

ὡς δὲ ἐγεύσατο ὁ ἀρχιτρίκλινος τὸ ὕδωρ οἶνον γεγενημένον
But when the master of the feast tasted the water which became wine,
καὶ οὐκ ᾔδει πόθεν ἐστίν,
and did not know from where it came
οἱ δὲ διάκονοι ᾔδεισαν οἱ ἠντληκότες τὸ ὕδωρ,
(but the servants who had drawn out the water knew),

φωνεῖ τὸν νυμφίον ὁ ἀρχιτρίκλινος

καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ•
and said to him,
πᾶς ἄνθρωπος πρῶτον τὸν καλὸν οἶνον τίθησιν
"Everyone first sets out the better wine,
καὶ ὅταν μεθυσθῶσιν τὸν ἐλάσσω•
and whenever they have drunk freely, then the worse [wine].
σὺ τετήρηκας τὸν καλὸν οἶνον ἕως ἄρτι.
But you have kept the better wine until now!"
