The whole paragraph appears to be one explanation after another about the testimony, who is giving the testimony, what the testimony is about, and what it means for those who do or do not believe it. John starts out with a premise: if you believe that Jesus is the Son of God, then you overcome the world. Everything that follows is some form of clarification or explanation that builds upon that one truth. John ends this paragraph with this exclusionary statement: if you have the Son, then you have the life, and if you do not have the Son, then you do not have the life. So, by deduction, we can with certainty conclude that there is a direct link (especially in Apostle John's eyes) between overcoming the world and having eternal life.

τίς ἐστιν ὁ νικῶν τὸν κόσμον εἰ μὴ ὁ πιστεύων ὅτι Ἰησοῦς ἐστιν ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ θεοῦ;
Who is the one who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?
This is the One who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ;
not with the water only,
but with the water and with the blood.
negativepositive
ideaexplanation
It is the Spirit who testifies,
because the Spirit is the truth.
ground
For there are three that testify:
the Spirit and the water and the blood;
and the three are in agreement.
series
If we receive the testimony of men,
the testimony of God is greater;
for the testimony of God is this,
that He has testified concerning His Son.
conditional
The one who believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself;
the one who does not believe God has made Him a liar,
because he has not believed in the testimony that God has given concerning His Son.
alternative
And the testimony is this,
that God has given us eternal life,
and this life is in His Son.
He who has the Son has the life;
he who does not have the Son of God does not have the life.
