Central Idea: Jesus pre-existed with the Father, and both physical and spiritual life come through Him. Vss. 1-2 - John parallels the creation account in Genesis 1 when describing Jesus' pre-existence and unity with the Father. Vss. 3 - The creation theme continues with the assertion that all things were made (given physical life) through Jesus. He is the word, spoken by God, through which all thing were made (cf. Gen 1:3, Col. 1:16, Heb. 1:2). Vss. 4-5 - Finally, John switches to spiritual life (John usually uses "zoe" for eternal life.) Just as God created light to shine in Genesis, so spiritual illumination - true life - comes through Jesus, and the light of righteousness will never be overcome by the darkness of sin.
