Central Idea: Everything Jesus does is for the purpose of glorifying God. Vss. 1-2 - The third day since the previous story. Jesus' family was evidently known to the wedding party, else His mother would not have been so concerned about the state of affairs at the celebration. Vss. 3-10 - Mary's concern for the lack of wine was probably rooted in the embarrassment that the wedding party would endure for not providing for their guests. But Jesus' concerns were much greater; He was focused on His ministry and its goal of bringing glory to God. Nevertheless, He cares about the plight of individual men and turned water into wine. There is a subtle point to made from Jesus' creation of new wine from the water intended for Jewish purification rites; the old was passing away and the new had come. Vs. 11 - Finally, the reason Jesus did this: that people might believe in Him. This first sign begins to show His power over the created order, as expounded by John in the first chapter.

On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee,
and the mother of Jesus was there.
Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples.
When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, "They have no wine."
λέγει αὐτῇ ὁ Ἰησοῦς· τί ἐμοὶ καὶ σοί, γύναι;
And Jesus said to her, "Woman, what does this have to do with me?
My hour has not yet come."

His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever he tells you."
Now there were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water."
And they filled them up to the brim.
