James 1:26-27 ESV
26 If anyone thinks he is religious q and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s r religion is worthless. 27 Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: s to visit t orphans and widows in their affliction, and u to keep oneself v unstained from the world.
What is true religion? What is true faith? There are many in the world who proclaim Christ as their Lord and Savior. Is it simply saying the magical words of faith in Christ? No, Paul wants to be clear that true faith in Christ is not mere theological agreement, but involves real life changing trust in King Jesus. This change shows itself in the way we love the weak and needy and it our holiness as we no longer live for this world but live for the King. Yes, Jesus alone saves... but he also changes those he saves. Yes, the call is to believe and trust in Christ alone. But that call includes trusting Jesus' call to put our sin to death, that call includes finding our life no longer in ourselves or the word but in our glorious savior Jesus Christ. We are saved by faith alone in Christ alone... but true faith always makes its self known in the way we live.
