There seems to be a emphasis upon the temporal relationships. And there is some correlation to the 2:1-10. Could it be that v. 12b-c are the Exp of the v. 12a Id? "separated from Christ, that is, alienated from commonwealth of Israel and strangers... and without." This may explain v. 13 and 17. To not be separated from Christ is to not be alienated from the commonwealth, nor to be stangers, etc. Separated is a Gentile issue, nearness is the Jewish issue. Christ, by His death, has demolished the two issues in order to make One issue... That issue is nearness. The wall of hostility is whatever it is that makes this distinction of near and far. By the blood of Christ that distinction is overcome, he preached peace to both near and far because the near and the far are really one in Him. The ground of v. 17 is "since w e both have access in one Spirit to the Father."

Therefore remember that formerly yo u Gentiles in the flesh,
the ones being called "the uncircumcision" by the ones being called the circumcision, which is made in the flesh by hands--
ideaexplanation
that you were at that time separated from Christ,
alienated from the commonwealth of Israel
and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope
and without God in the world.
series
But now in Christ Jesus you who fomerly were far off
you have become near by the blood of Christ.
negativepositive
(The far are now the near because) he himself i s our (racial barrier-breaking) peace ,
the one having made us both one and has broken down the dividing wall of hostility.
ground
In his flesh , the law of commandments in ordinances he having nullified
in order that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two,
so making peace ,
actionresult
and might reconcile us both to God in one body
through the cross, killing the hostility in him.
actionmanner
actionpurpose
And he came
preaching peace
to you who were far off
and peace to those who were near.
since through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father.
(Consequently) you are no longer strangers and aliens,
but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God,
having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets,
(of this foundation) Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone,
in whom the whole structure grows into a holy temple in the Lord,
(by) being joined together
In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.
