How should we understand Paul's explanation of how the Gentiles walk? I do not necessarily take v. 18's mention of the mind and heart to show a priority relationship between the two. The question is if Paul is trying to give us that. It seems that he is saying these as synonymous phrases, both beginning with "dia" and connected back to their alienation from God (cf. Rom 1:21, "futile in their thinking, their foolish hearts were darkened").

For this reason (because you are gloriously united as one body in Christ) I say and testify in the Lord,
you are to no longer walk,
as also the Gentiles are walking in the futility of their minds,
comparison
(Let me explain their futile minds) They are darkened in their minds,
alienated from the life of God
series
on account of the ignorance that is in them,
on account of the stubbornness of their hearts
ground
who have become insensible
they have given themselves to sensuality for every kind of unclean work in greed

ideaexplanation
But you! (you shouldn't walk like the Gentiles because) that is not the way you learned Christ
if indeed you heard him
and were taught in him
as the truth is in Jesus
to put off your old self according to the former way of life,
(the former way of life is) corrupt according to deceitful desires
but (by being) renewed in the spirit of your minds
and put on the new man, created according to the likeness of God in the righteousness and holiness of truth.
