Questions: 1. According to 4:9, are we to understand that Jesus descended into hell? What are the "lower regions of the earth?" It does not seem that this passage has in view any descent into the region of hell. Other passages may allude to a descent into hell, but this current text does not seem to support such an idea. Instead, what seems to be in view is the incarnation of Jesus. It is Jesus who has came to earth and "dwelt among us" (John 1:14). It is also this same Jesus who has "ascended far above all the heavens" and is now seated at the right hand of God (Mark 16:19). Therefore, I take 4:9 to mean that Jesus left the throne of heaven came to earth to dwell among men. After his earthly work was finished, he ascended back to heaven and reclaimed his rightful place at the right hand of his Father. 2. What are the implications for "when each part is working properly"..."the body grows"...and "builds itself up in love" ? It means that the whole body has a part to play to ensure that the body functions properly. All of us have been given gifts to use in the service of the Church for the glory of Christ (1 Cor 12). When all of us are employing the gifts that Jesus has distributed to us through the Spirit, we help the body grow and live to the glory of Jesus. The pastoral implications are massive. How can we make sure that our people understand what their gifts are? How can we then help them exercise their gifts in the service of the body? Not to mention, we need to make sure that the gifts are functioning properly. The pastoral problems that surround this issue continually compound.
