Therefore this I say and I testify in the Lord,
that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do,
in the futility of their minds.
being darkened in their understanding,
alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them,
through to their hardness of heart.
having become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity.

But that is not the way you learned Christ!—
assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus,
to put off your old self,
which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires,
ideaexplanation
and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds,
and to put on the new self,
created after the likeness of God

1. " Put off your old self" is not an imperative. Is this a command or something that has already happened? It is true that we are to cast off the old self in terms of fleeing from sin (hating it) and pursuing Christlikeness. But, at one level, because of the fact that we have been crucified with Christ, the old self has already been put off. Yet, because the presence of sin remains, we must continually strip away the dead man. Thus, we live in a way that brings glory and honor to him. Matthew Henry phrases the text this way: "This is a great part of the doctrine which has been taught you, and which you have learned." So, instead of giving a command the apostle is reminding the Ephesian believers of what they have already been taught. In Christ, they have put off the old man and are new creatures! Henry is helpful again when says that "it is not enough to cease to do evil, but we must learn to do well." We must be renewed in our minds and live out the reality that we are new creatures and bear the likeness of God in "true righteousness and holiness." 2. What does it mean that our new self is "created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness"? At this point some within the Reformed tradition have stated that we lost the image of God stamped on our soul at the fall. This is not the case as can be seen in passages such as Gen 9:6. The image of God remains in all fallen human beings, yet it is tainted and marred. Here, we are recreated and the new man bears the image of God "in true righteousness and holiness." We are created in in the "likeness of God", which means we are recreated as those who are righteous and holy. The action is to be "created" and the manner is to be "created" in "righteousness and holiness." Our new self is upright in the eyes of God because of the imputation of the righteousness of Jesus. We have an alien righteousness. And we are holy. In Jesus, we are people who are committed to the glory of God above all things.
