1. How does verse 22 connect to the previous verse? Submit to one another and yet wives are to submit to the husband . The law of non-contradiction does not have to be violated at this point. Wives and husbands submit to one another in one way and yet wives can submit to their husbands in another way as well. The two can be distinct expressions and thus not contradictory. We care for one another and put each other's interest above our own. We submit our wills and serve one another. Yet, wives are to submit to the husband in a specific way within the marriage relationship. 2. Genesis 2:24 is functioning...how? I think the Genesis 2 passage is serving as a ground statement. Paul is talking about husbands loving their wives as his "own flesh." The two are united in a way that cannot be seen with human eyes. There is a profound oneness between the man and woman. Paul can speak this way because it is something that has already been taught. Moses wrote this way centuries before. What he is stating is rooted in prior revelation. What is new is what comes next. Not new in the sense that is has not been true up to this point but new in the sense that it is explained in a way that it has not been explained before.
