1. What does it mean for sexual immorality to not be "named among" the Ephesians? Is this a shorthand way of saying don't partake in the physical act, nor joke about the physical acts themselves? John MacArthur states that sins such as sexual immorality "are so godless that the world should never have reason even to suspect their presence in Christians" (MacArthur Study Bible, 1780). Paul makes this point clear as he states that such sins "should not even be named among" the believing community in Ephesus. The question is, "what does it mean to not have something named among you"? It seems that both senses are in view. Immediately following verse 4 Paul deals with the issue of speech. Filthy speech should be put away from the mouth of the follower of Christ. These sins are to be abhorred So serious are they that not engaging in them is not enough. God's people should never make light of such things either. From our mouths pours the overflow of our hearts. Our joking about such things may reveal hearts that are not broken over sexual sin like we should be. And at worst, our jokes, or making light of, such sins could reveal hearts that take delight still in these sinful acts. 2. What does it mean that God's wrath is coming upon the sons of disobedience "for...these things"? What empty words have demanded the justice of God ? We know that God's wrath is coming upon the unrepentant world because of their sin. But what are these empty words? Why the focus here? 3. What are the unfruitful works of darkness? What does it mean to expose them "by the light" ? They are the works that do not conform with the righteous works for which we have been created (Eph 2:10; 4:24). We expose them by our words....right?
