James 1:26-27 ESV
26 If anyone thinks he is religious q and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s r religion is worthless. 27 Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: s to visit t orphans and widows in their affliction, and u to keep oneself v unstained from the world.
James starts this chapter encouraging people when they are going through a trial/tribulation or a testing of faith. Throughout the chapter, James continually contrasts two characteristic types of people. Working through the chapter I wrote them all out below: The person who doubts (vs. 6-7) The person who asks in faith (vs. 5-6) The rich in humiliation (vs. 10-11) Lowly boast in his exaltation(vs. 9) The person who falls into temptation (vs. 14-15) The person who perseveres in trial (vs. 12) The person who hears and doesn't do/act (vs. 23-24) The person listens to the Word and obeys (vs. 25) The person without self control. (vs. 26) The person with self control and serving God. (vs. 27) James contrasts two people here: The first person is someone who thinks that he is serving God and doing good, however he doesn't have self control, cannot bridle his tongue, falls into temptation and doubts. James states that he is living a lie and is deceiving his own heart. The second person that James is talking about here is someone who is serving God out of a pure heart and helping those in need. This person listens to and obeys the Word, has self control, doesn't give into temptation and has unwavering faith in God. James points out orphans and widows, he is not stating that this is the only way that we can serve God. Maybe at the time James was writing this, these two groups of people were over-looked by the 12 tribes. James was giving these two as examples of practical ways to serve God. Main point** I take the main point from this is to serve God, by loving and serving others in need. Also to obey God's Word and have self control in staying unstained from sins of this world.
If anyone thinks he is religious
If someone believes they are good
q and does not bridle his tongue
but cannot control his speech
but deceives his heart,
He deceives his heart
this person’s r religion is worthless.
then this person's religion is worthless.
Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this:
However, religion that is genuine and pure, defined by God is This:
s to visit t orphans and widows in their affliction,
which is visiting orphans and widows in their trouble
and u to keep oneself v unstained from the world.
and to stay unstained from sin in this world.
