Central Idea: "Fulfill the commandments of the LORD your God" Summary 6a Fulfill God's commands (like Jesus: "I have...come...to fulfill them" Mt 5:17) by: 6b Walking in His ways (behaviour towards God) - 1a being careful to do them, so that 1b-d you may live, multiply, and go in and possess the land He promised; 6c Fearing Him (attitude towards God) - 5b know deeply that He disciplines you 5a like a son, 2a by remembering the way He led you: that 2b though He led you through the wilderness 2d to test you 2c by humbling you - 3b letting you hunger, then 3c feeding you strange food ( 3e teaching that man lives by God's Word 3d not food alone) - 4a yet, your clothes didn't wear out and 4b your feet didn't swell. Once you prove you are careful to keep God's commandments, He will bring you out of the wilderness of testing and into the land He promised to give. I'm learning that deserts are very important to God, because they show Him (and us) clearly whether or not we love Him. True love for God comes from a strengthening Christ-like character that responds to Him in the way Christ does. A person with weak character will not stand for God's honour when found in an environment of sinful pressure; he will get swept away into sin and hence not exhibit true love for God. Similarly and surprisingly, a person with weak character will also not have the strength to stand for God's honour when found in an environment of godly pressure; indeed, he will get swept away into godly activity due to the pressure of the environment, but not due to a growing character of love for God. In the desert, there are no such direct pressures - it is barren. It is in this lack of pressure where the true character of a man is revealed. Will the desert experience reveal such a strengthening Christ-like character that drives a man toward God without the pull of external influences?
