Central Idea: "Labour humbly with God to escape the sin-ruined life." Summary: Since God is already working to will (sufficiently desire) in you and to empower ("energise") you for the fulfillment of His pleasure: Work through the steps God is initiating to deliver you from a sin-run life; do this with fear and trembling since you yourself do not possess the will and power (necessitating His working in these ways), In the manner that you have always been obeying, both in Paul's presence and even more now in his absence. Notes: The main message is encouragement to persevere in seeking salvation (sanctification). As noted in Jonathan Edwards' sermon, "The Manner in Which the Salvation of the Soul is to be Sought", Noah was saved by God's initiation of a plan to provide a life-saving ark. However, it was fitting by the Will of God for Noah to labour with God in order to receive His provision of salvation: " Though it be not needful that we do any thing to merit salvation, which Christ hath fully merited for all who believe in him; yet God, for wise and holy ends, hath appointed, that we should come to final salvation in no other way, but that of good works done by us...So God hath appointed that man should not be saved without his undertaking and doing this work of which I have been speaking; and therefore we are commanded 'to work out our own salvation with fear and trembling,' Philip. ii. 12." - Jonathan Edwards (This is not "salvation by works" as God is the one who freely and graciously wills in us and empowers us to "build the ark" we could not on our own.)
