Main point summary
Woe to those who live for these last days! They will see their materials, and their hearts which are captured by them, decay at the coming of the Lord. As for those who live for eternity, they should establish themselves and be patient, looking to God's word as their bread until he comes again to deliver them.
Ἄγε νῦν οἱ πλούσιοι ,
Come now, x you rich,
ὀλολύζοντες ἐπὶ ταῖς ταλαιπωρίαις
for the y miseries
ὑμῶν ταῖς ἐπερχομέναις .
that are coming upon you.
ὁ πλοῦτος ὑμῶν σέσηπεν
z Your riches have rotted
καὶ τὰ ἱμάτια ὑμῶν σητόβρωτα γέγονεν ,
and z your garments are moth-eaten.
ὁ χρυσὸς ὑμῶν καὶ ὁ ἄργυρος κατίωται
Your gold and silver have corroded,
καὶ ὁ ἰὸς αὐτῶν εἰς μαρτύριον ὑμῖν ἔσται
and their corrosion will be evidence against you
καὶ φάγεται τὰς σάρκας ὑμῶν
and will eat your flesh
a You have laid up treasure
ἐν ἐσχάταις ἡμέραις.
b in the last days.
ὁ μισθὸς τῶν ἐργατῶν... κράζει
c the wages of the laborers...are crying out against you
τῶν ἀμησάντων τὰς χώρας ὑμῶν
who mowed your fields,
ὁ ἀπεστερημένος ἀφʼ ὑμῶν...,
which you kept back by fraud,...,
καὶ αἱ βοαὶ τῶν θερισάντων εἰς τὰ ὦτα κυρίου σαβαὼθ εἰσεληλύθασιν .
and d the cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of e the Lord of hosts.
ἐτρυφήσατε ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς
f You have lived on the earth in luxury
καὶ ἐσπαταλήσατε ,
and g in self-indulgence.
ἐθρέψατε τὰς καρδίας ὑμῶν
You have fattened your hearts
ἐν ἡμέρᾳ σφαγῆς,
in h a day of slaughter.
You have condemned
ἐφονεύσατε τὸν δίκαιον,
and i murdered j the righteous person.
οὐκ ἀντιτάσσεται ὑμῖν.
He does not resist you.
... ἀδελφοί ,
Be patient, therefore,
ἕως τῆς παρουσίας τοῦ κυρίου.
until the coming of the Lord.
ὁ γεωργὸς ἐκδέχεται τὸν τίμιον καρπὸν τῆς γῆς
how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth,
μακροθυμῶν ἐπʼ αὐτῷ
being patient about it,
ἕως λάβῃ πρόϊμον καὶ ὄψιμον.
until it receives k the early and the late rains.
μακροθυμήσατε καὶ ὑμεῖς,
You also, be patient.
στηρίξατε τὰς καρδίας ὑμῶν,
l Establish your hearts,
ὅτι ἡ παρουσία τοῦ κυρίου ἤγγικεν .

... ἀδελφοί ,
μὴ στενάζετε ,... κατʼ ἀλλήλων
Do not grumble against one another,
ἵνα μὴ κριθῆτε •

ὁ κριτὴς πρὸ τῶν θυρῶν ἕστηκεν .

... ἀδελφοί ,
ὑπόδειγμα λάβετε ,... τῆς κακοπαθίας καὶ τῆς μακροθυμίας τοὺς προφήτας
As an example of suffering and patience,... take q the prophets
οἳ ἐλάλησαν ἐν τῷ ὀνόματι κυρίου.

μακαρίζομεν τοὺς ὑπομείναντας •
we consider those blessed who remained steadfast.
τὴν ὑπομονὴν Ἰὼβ ἠκούσατε
You have heard of r the steadfastness of Job,
καὶ τὸ τέλος κυρίου εἴδετε ,
and you have seen s the purpose of the Lord,
ὅτι πολύσπλαγχνός ἐστιν ὁ κύριος καὶ οἰκτίρμων.
how t the Lord is compassionate and merciful.
