Thoughts
O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear, All because we do not carry, Everything to God in prayer! Brothers, what an amazing commendation! "Don't be anxious," says the apostle, "but have the very peace that is produced by God himself." Not only this, but he gives us the means to that peace: constant, urgent, and thankful prayer. The manner in which we make our requests known to God is of paramount importance. "But God already knows my need—nay, he has sovereignly orchestrated that need—and he will take care of what he wills!" you Calvinists say. Does God know them already? Of course he does. Has he orchestrated them? Yes, never doubt his sovereignty. But should his sovereign hand lead us to neglect his sovereign solution? Μὴ γένοτιο. Have you let your requests be made known to him, in every situation, by prayer and urgent pleading with thanksgiving? How quickly do we turn to prayer in this way? How quickly do we turn to anxiousness instead? Don't you want the peace produced by God? The kind that surpasses all understanding? Don't you want that peace guarding your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus like a holy battalion guarding your soul in the citadel of truth? Then take it all, my brothers, to the Lord in prayer. What a Friend we have in Jesus, All our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carry Everything to God in prayer! O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear, All because we do not carry Everything to God in prayer! Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble anywhere? We should never be discouraged, Take it to the Lord in prayer. Can we find a friend so faithful Who will all our sorrows share? Jesus knows our every weakness, Take it to the Lord in prayer. Are we weak and heavy-laden, Cumbered with a load of care? Precious Savior, still our refuge— Take it to the Lord in prayer; Do thy friends despise, forsake thee? Take it to the Lord in prayer; In His arms He’ll take and shield thee, Thou wilt find a solace there.
The Main Point
God has ordained constant, urgent, and thankful prayer as a means through which we obtain a God-wrought peace that surpasses all understanding and keeps our hearts and thoughts in Jesus!
