Divisions: 13-14: Take comfort in knowing that because Jesus rose from the dead so will all believers. 15: The afterlife is nearly simultaneous for all believers. 16-18: All believers will join Christ at his coming. 5: 1-3: The day of Christ's coming cannot be predicted. 4-8: Be ready for his coming by living in his light of truth. 9-11: Encourage one another in your guaranteed salvation. alternative divisions for 1-11: 1-6: Those in darkness will be shocked at his coming but not you who live in the light. 7-11: Since you, confident of your salvation, live with faith and love, you should keep on encouraging one another. Main Point Summary: Have courage and share it: Christ is coming back for all believers - the living and the dead. You can't know when he will come so always be ready unlike those who dwell content in their delusions. Primary points: 1. v18: Encourage one another. Supporting: 14a, 16a, 17c. Supporting: 14b and 15c; 16b and 17a. 2. v5:11: Encourage one another and build each other up. Supporting: 2a,4a,8a,9ab. Supporting: 10b. Insights/takeaways: The main message is to encourage and the tone is one of encouragement. Truth: The day of Christ's coming cannot be predicted. Application: I will not worry about when Christ will come. Truth: Those living in darkness will be shocked at his coming. Application: I will pray for those living in darkness to see the light. Truth: Believers can be confident that all believers will join Christ at his coming regardless of when they died. Application: I will not worry about the salvation of the dead. Truth: Since we are secure, we should encourage one another. Application: I will be a source of encouragement. Use of OT: 4:16 "because the Lord himself will come down" echoes repeated use of "day of the Lord" as the day of judgement such as Isa.2-10-12. "trumpet": used as signal in OT. And to signal the day: Isa 27:13. 17a: Clouds: associated with theophany such as Lord descending as a cloud on Mt Sinai and on the tabernacle and on the temple. 5:2b: Day of the Lord again. 5:3a: Peace and security: Echo of OT prophetic warnings: Jer 6:14. Ezek. 13:10. 5:3b: Labor pains comparison: Frequently used in OT. Also a pain that comes with a reward. 5:4-8: Day/night-light/darkness: frequent OT theme. 5:8b: Righteous breastplate: Isa 59:17. Observations : 5:3a: Peace and security may be reference to Roman propaganda: Pax Romana - Caesar being the source of peace and protection. The only reliable eternal peace and protection comes from God. *We all have doubts and need re-assurance that Christ will return and make all things righteous, especially as our society spirals downward into lies and apostasy. *Faith should not be focused on being with God in heaven but on being with Christ when he returns to rule. *This passage makes me upset about the Catholic tradition of praying for the salvation of the dead. *I find it symbolic that there is a focus today on "the day of the dead" whereas this passage focuses on the "the day of the Lord". To me this seems related to the youth craze about zombies, the walking dead. Is the whole idea that zombies can come back to life a satanic lie - that death is not really death? Euphemisms : Fallen asleep. Times and seasons. Similes : Like a thief. As labor pains. Metaphors : Children of light. Children of the day. Belong to the day. Of the night. Of the darkness. Commands: 4:13 Do not be uninformed and do not grieve. 4:18: Encourage one another. 5:6a: Let us not sleep. 5:6b: Keep awake. 5:6c and 8b: Be sober. 5:8c: Put on breastplate to faith and love, and 8d: helmet of hope of salvation. (also anchors) (The syntax suggests this may be accomplished and thus only an anchor but it could be a command for readers that have not submitted to it.) 5:11ab: Encourage and build up. Means: 14b: Brought through Jesus. 15b: By a word of the Lord. Means of their communication. 16a: Lord himself descends, with cry and trumpet. 17a: Catching up into the clouds. 18: with these words. 5:2a: You are aware - i.e. previously informed. 5:2b: The Lord will come suddenly. 5:9b: Through Jesus. Anchors: 14a: Jesus died and rose again. Past truth. 15b: By a word of the Lord. Truly authoritative communication. 17c: Always with the Lord. Future truth. 5:4a: We are not in darkness. (have and live in the truth) 5:5b: Not of the darkness. (our faith is from God, not Satan) 5:8a: Belong to the day. (possessed by the truth) 8cd: Have put on the breastplate of faith and love and helmet of hope of salvation. (Equipped with and protected by the truth.) 5:9ab: Not destined for wrath but for salvation. (Future truth) Motivations: 17b: To meet the Lord. 5:3c: Avoid the pain of those ignorant of the truth. 5:10a: Christ died for us. 5:10b: To live with him. Future Plans I plan to incorporate paraphrasing and the other tools in the course into my regular Bible study. I intend to teach aspects of paraphrasing in my children teaching ministry with Bible Study Fellowship. The book I am already working on is James. Outline: 1 Thessalonians 1:1-5:28 I. GREETINGS: 1:1 II. MAIN BODY 1:2-5:22 A. Encouragement for past faith and works. 1:2-10 B. Our mutually beneficial relationship in ministry. 2:1-16 C. But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers,
But, friends, we don't intend that you be in the dark
about those who are asleep,

g that you may not grieve
We don't want you to walk around with your heads hanging low
as others do h who have no hope.
like the people who have no hope of eternal life.

actionpurpose
For i since we believe that Jesus died and rose again,
Because we know that our Messiah, Jesus, died and was raised to life,
even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him j those who have fallen asleep.
and likewise, through the Messiah, God will gather to himself all the faithful who have died before the Messiah returns.
For this we declare to you
Because we strongly proclaim to you
k by a word from the Lord, 1
by instruction from the Lord,
actionmanner
that l we who are alive, who are left until m the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep.
that those of us left alive when Jesus returns will not join the Lord any sooner than our brothers and sisters who died before.
inference
For n the Lord himself will descend o from heaven p with a cry of command, with the voice of q an archangel, and r with the sound of the trumpet of God.
Because the Messiah will come down from above with as shouted command, with the voice of an archangel, and the blowing of the trumpet of God.
And s the dead in Christ will rise first.
And believers who died before will go up to him first.
actionresult
Then we who are alive, who are left, will be t caught up together with them u in the clouds
After that, those of us still alive will go up in the clouds
to meet the Lord in the air,
to be with our Messiah in the air,
and so v we will always be with the Lord.
and never to be separated from him again.

Therefore encourage one another with these words.
Therefore , encourage others with this message of hope.
Now concerning w the times and the seasons, brothers, 1 x you have no need to have anything written to you.
With regard to when the Messiah will return, you already know what you need to know.
For you yourselves are fully aware
Because you clearly know
that y the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.
that the timing of the Messiah's return will come without warning.
While people are saying,
Just when people say
“There is peace and security,”
that all is well,

then the truth will hit them
a as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman,
like a sudden rupture of your appendix,
and they will not escape.
with no surgeon to cure it.
But you b are not in darkness, brothers,
But you are not ignorant
for that day to surprise you like a thief.
such that you should be shocked when the Lord comes.
For you are all c children 1 of light, children of the day.
Because you, as God's children, know the truth.
We are not of the night or of the darkness.
God's children are not without knowledge.
So then d let us not sleep, as others do,
Therefore , don't close your eyes and pretend that he is not coming yet,
but let us e keep awake
but rather be always ready to see him
and f be sober.
and be alert.

For those who sleep, sleep at night,
Because those who shut their eyes to this truth are in the dark,
and those who get drunk, g are drunk at night.
and those unconscious from drugs are in the dark.
But since we belong to the day ,
But because we live in the light of God's truth,
let us be sober,
let us be always alert,
h having put on the breastplate of i faith and love,
wearing the protection of faith and love,
and for a helmet the hope of salvation.
and the protection of our minds with our hope in what Christ has done for us.
For God has not destined us for j wrath,
Because God has not chosen us to be subject to his righteous anger,
but k to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,
but to be reconciled to fellowship with him through our Messiah
l who died for us
who made the ultimate atonement for our sins to our souls
so that whether we are awake or asleep we might live with him.
in order that all the faithful - dead or alive- will be with the Messiah for eternity.

Therefore encourage one another
Because of this, share your joy together
and build one another up,
and fortify each other with the truth,
just as you are doing.
like you are already doing.
