Main Idea: The name of YHWH is majestic, and His glory is evident throughout all the earth. (1a, 9) 1. His glory is evident in the beauty of creation and in the praise from the weakest and insignificant. (1b-2) 2. His glory is evident in how YHWH has blessed David, the King. (3-8) David is amazed at YHWH's loving care of him in relationship to the vastness and greatness of God's universe. (3-4) David is humbled by all the honor and responsibility that YHWH has given him, and all of YHWH's creation that has been entrusted to Him. (5-8) While it is generally true of mankind, I take 3-8 to be primarily about David given the way the NT writers apply it to Jesus, and David’s Kingship is understood to be a type of, or pointer to, the Messianic Kingship. Examples: Psalm 8:2 is quoted by Jesus in Matthew 21:16 Psalm 8:4-6 is quoted almost entirely in Heb. 2:6-8, as referring to Jesus. Paul, in 1 Cor. 15:16, is specific in attributing "all things are put in subjection" to Jesus. Paul, in Eph. 1:22-23, states "he put all things under his feet", again in reference to Jesus. Rev. 5 trumpets the honor, glory, power and dominion of Jesus Christ.

Psalms 8:1-9
OT
esv
To the choirmaster: according to The Gittith. A Psalm of David.
O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!
You have set your glory above the heavens.
Out of the mouth of babies and infants, you have established strength
because of your foes, to still the enemy and the avenger.
When I look at your heavens,
the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,
what is man that you are mindful of him,
and the son of man that you care for him?

Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings
and crowned him with glory and honor.
You have given him dominion over the works of your hands;
you have put all things under his feet,
all sheep and oxen,
and also the beasts of the field,
the birds of the heavens,
and the fish of the sea,
whatever passes along the paths of the seas.
