Central Idea: In contrast to the enemies of the cross who hope in a sandy foundation of earthly things, we are citizens of Heavens, believing and hoping in the true God, striving to bring the culture of Heaven to earth, to follow Godly examples so that we make stay true to the Lord. Summary: We are given two commands in this passage, one opening and one closing the passage. We are to follow Godly examples, and we are to stay true to the Lord. These work in tandem: we are to pursue relationship with Godly people, so that we might be encouraged and be pointed to Christ. But why is this important? Sandwiched between these two commands are two contrasting reasons. One, there are many in this world who are enemies of the cross. This is both a warning for us to not falter and become an enemy of the cross, and also an encouragement that our radical Christian lives are lights to this world. Secondly, we stay true to the Lord because we are citizens of Heaven. In constrast to the eenemy of the cross, a citizen of Heaven hopes in the real God, and their minds are set on Heavenly things, not Earthly things. Notes: The charge : There are two charges, one at the beginning (v. 3:17) and one at the end (v. 4:1) of the passage. The two together seem to be the same charge, supported by vv. 3:18–3:21. This forms a bilateral, where we see two commands supported by the same argument. Charge #1 : "Pattern your lives after mine, and learn from those who follow our example". What is the example set out here? It is whole hearted Godly pursuit of Christ. Philippians 3:7–14: We discard everything in life to pursue Christ, and recognize it is He that makes us right with God. Phillipians 4:8–9: We fix our thoughts on what is true, honorable, right, pure, and lovely. We think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. We watch closely and protect what we let enter our hearts and mind. 1 Corinthians 4:6: We study and eat up the Word, which keeps us from pride and gives us a genuine Gospel humility. 1 Corinthians 11:1: We are to imitate Christ. We are to learn about Jesus, and study His life, and follow that, for that is what Paul is following. 2 Thessalonians 3:7–9: We work hard, not taking advantage of others, but working to live above reproach. We are not idle, but to pursue righteousness and the advance of the Gospel. Charge #2 : "Stay true to the Lord". This is an echo of v. 1:21: "Above all, you must live as citizens of Heaven, conducting yourselves in a manner worthy of the Good News about Christ. Then, whether I come and see you again or only hear about you, I will know that you are standing together with one spirit and one purpose, fighting together for the faith, which is the Good News" "Stay true" is literally "stand firm". It is to not be swayed by external forces, to not let the truth of Christ and His promises slide into our forgetfulness. Summary of the charges: stay true to the Lord by following the example of Godly men and women. The reason : Why does Paul want us to stay true to the Lord by following the Godly example of others? The answer is two contrasting statements: Reason #1 : "That there are many whose conduct shows they are really enemies of the cross of Christ" There are four characteristics of those who are "enemies" of the cross: Their end is destruction : When they die, they will be banished from God's presence to hell (Matthew 25:31–46). Their entire life, every moment, every thought, will be wasted, futile, worthless. The mortality rate for humans is 100%, we all die, and we are either going to be in Jesus' glorious presence, or without His presence with no hope. Our life would be easier if we didn't think about this or tell people about it, it isn't popular! Their god is their belly : a god is something that is the center of our lives that we sacrifice for and pursue, that captures our thoughts. A god is what we hope in, something bigger than ourselves that we trust to bring us hope and happiness. For enemies of Christ, their god is their wants and desires, false gods that they think will fill their earthly appetite. But in the end, it will amount to nothing. There is only one God, and that's Jesus (1 Timothy 2:5–6). We don't find God, He finds us. Any god that we think we've discovered is a false god. They glory in their shame : the things that the enemies of Christ brag about are earthly, immoral things. They are so proud of their sin, their earthly accomplishments that they think they've achieved on their own. Their minds are set on earthly things : their whole orientation on life is wrong. They think life is about earth, not Heaven. It's like the college student who thinks college is about those 4 years. It's not, it's about striving and thinking and preparing for what's beyond. Life is about preparing for Heaven. But why would this be a reason to stay true to the Lord? Paul's concern for the people: he doesn't want them to be focused on earth, to orient their life around a false god who will do nothing but disappoint and destroy. Our conduct points others to Christ: by following Christ and living a radically different life than most of the world, we point others to Christ. Reason #2 : "But we are citizens of heaven, where the Lord Jesus lives" The second reason is a contrast to the living as an enemy of the cross: living as a citizen of Heaven: Our end : eternity! We will share the same fate as the enemy of the cross: death. But it doesn't end with death, that's just the beginning. When the believer dies, he will then spend eternity in the presence of his Creator, with hope, and with all sin and strife and tears wiped away. Because we are citizens of Heaven, we are then home, back in the place that is our comfort and refuge. When the believer dies, decay is eradicated, and are given glorious resurrection bodies like our own Savior's (vv. 3:20–3:21). Our God : the true God. The believer is centered on the Savior. Our hope and life is built on a solid, unshakable foundation of eternal security. Our God will never disappoint, never abandon, always listen, and always speak through His Word. Our glory : Christ Jesus! The focus of our entire life is to bring glory to God. We are fully justified once by God's power, and the rest of our earthly life is becoming like Him by working to increase the glory of God's name. We strive in all things to keep His name getting louder and bigger in our hearts and minds, until there is not a square inch of room for us, it's all about Christ. Our mind's orientation : Heaven. Our focus is on eternity. We plan each day with Eternity in the forefront of our mind. We try to bring Heaven to Earth. At the time Paul wrote this, the Philippians were citizens of Rome, even though they weren't in Rome. As citizens of Rome, they strove to bring Roman culture to Philippi. They were a Roman outpost. On this Earth, with our minds focused on Heaven, we are an outpost of Heaven. We are to strive to bring Heaven's culture here to earth. We focus on the hope that we have in the resurrection. In vv. 3:21, we see that God will transform our lowly body to be like His glorious body, by His power. We have access to that resurrection power through Christ. The same power that raised Him from the dead will bring spiritually dead people alive, and is our hope after deah. Questions: How do we follow Godly examples and learn from them, patterning our life after their example? Well, first we need to have Godly examples in our life. Who are the Godly examples in your life? How are they teaching you? In my life, the Godly examples are my wife, those at my church (e.g. Justin, Matt, Jeremy, the members of my NG), and my family. Who is someone that you want to be like? I would love to be like Matt Lyon, a father who dearly loves his kids and is working to train his boys and daughter to be men and women of God. He loves his wife, and is passionate about seeing her grow, and to see his marriage be an example to others. I would love to witness to my co-workers like he does: he has a heart for the lost, the orphan, the broken hearted. But he is willing to be firm with others, to point them to Christ in what he does. How do we "stay true to the Lord"? We see this in vv. 3:20–3:21. We recognize that our citizenship is in heaven, not on earth. Instead of promoting the agenda of the world, we promote the culture of heaven. Our eyes are fixed eternally, not earthly. We recognize that Jesus has saved us, and we wait expectantly for his power to come. We recognize that we are under Christ, who is over all things. We pray to him to give us the power to resist the negative influences of temptation, false teaching, and persecution. What do you sacrifice for? What captures your thoughts? Is Jesus just a time slot in your day, or does is He invited into every moment and corner of your life? What do you brag about? How often do you think about your own death? What if you were to orient your mind every morning thinking about the day you would die and stand before Christ to give an account? How would that change your priorities? How do we bring Heaven's culture to earth? How have you done that this past week?
