Central idea: Preach the Word, which has the power to correct, in order to teach the truth to people who are itching for it, having become competent through the continual calibration through the Word. Summary: This passage is structured in two pieces by two charges. First, Paul charges Timothy to continue in the truth. Paul then describes the manner in which this is to happen: knowing the origin of what he has learned, and furthermore, remembering his knowledge of the scriptures. The profitability and importance of the Word and its purpose in training the man of God seems to be Paul's primary point in vv. 14-17. On the heels of Paul's reminders about the Word comes the second charge, "preach the Word". This alludes to an implicit inference that we are to preach the Word because it is "breathed out by God and profitable". And Paul gives guidelines for what it means to preach the word and the truth. The passage ends with the second part of this second charge, an explanation of why this is so important to do: "for time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching." This acts as a reverse bilateral. "The Word is breathed out by God, therefore preach the Word, because there will come a time when people will not endure sound teaching." Notes: The result of the Word being the breath of God, it is profitable for: Teaching : Didaskalia — teaching and instruction, doctrine Reproof : Elegxis/Elegcho — to refute or to convict generally with a sense of shame of the person convicted, by conviction to bring to light, to find fault with, correct Correction : Epanorthosis — restoration to an upright or right state, correction, improvement of life or character Training in Righteousness : Paideia — Discipline, instruction which aims at increasing virtue; Dikaiosune — in a broad sense: state of him who is as he ought to be, righteousness, the condition acceptable to God, the doctrine concerning the way in which man may attain a state approved of God The purpose of the Word being the breath of God is: That the man of God may be competent That the man of God will be equipped for every good work (relating back to 2 Timothy 2:21: "Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from what is dishonorable, he will be a vessel for honorable use, set apart as holy, useful to the master of the ouse, ready for every good work.") How we are to preach the Word: Reprove Rebuke Exhort With complete patience and complete teaching — we are not to hide anything or shy away from anything, even if it is hard. v. 15: "Which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus", followed by v. 16 which explains Scripture, then v. 17, "that the man of God my be competent, equipped for every good work". Scripture is what makes us see the truth to receive salvation, and Scripture is also for equipping us in righteousness. If Scripture leads to salvation and good works, then good works should be an indication of our salvation. Questions: Why is it important that Timothy know "from whom [he] learned it"? What does the phrase "in season and out of season" mean? What are some examples today of people who have "accumulated teachers to suit their own passions"?

But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed,
knowing from whom you learned it
and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings ,
which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

I charge you
in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead,
and by his appearing and his kingdom:
preach the word;
be ready in season and out of season;
reprove,
rebuke,
and exhort,
with complete patience and teaching.
For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching,
but having itching ears
they will accumulate for themselves teachers
to suit their own passions,
and will turn away from listening to the truth
and wander off into myths.
